My incubator stinks now....

Nor sure if that will harm the eggs or not

. Also MissPrissy, I cleaned it out this morning and I will let you all know around 11:00 if it worked or if I have another bad egg. I've never washed anything so fast.

I had a staggered stinky hatch once and I couldn't stand it.

I took a little cooler I had and rinsed it with hot, hot water. Shook it dry rather than really drying it and put the good eggs in there while I cleaned the incubator as fast as I could. Worked like a charm. Eggs stayed warm and humid and the stinkies were gone.

O.K. I went and smelled through one of the little holes in the top of the bator and I am guessing I have a bad egg.

Hate to say it but it's the old egg to the nose to find it. Work quick and don't forget to breathe.

Same thing happened to me a couple of days ago. I did exactly what Miss Prissy recommended. I heated a towel in the dryer, put all the eggs in it and cleaned the bator at lightening speed. I was afraid to use anything except some dish detergent and water for fear of harming the eggs. It took most of the smell away and it's getting better over time.

I done this but the smell is so overwhelming that all the eggs smell this way.

Any more suggestions?

When the hatch is over -

- wash the bator in hot soapy water

- rinse well

- soak in a tub of hot diluted bleach water

- rinse well

- set in the blazing sun for a day (morning to night)

There should be no lingering smell. If there is a smell wash, rinse, repeat because there is bacteria growing somewhere in the bator. That could cause every hatch after to fail.

Thanks MissP, I will do this unless one of the other later eggs crack again, then I will know.

I've got a couple chain link dog kennels set up for peeps in various growing stages. When I have one that is empty I will put the incubator out there in the sun after cleaning it.

First time I ever did it my husband looked at me like I was getting soft in the head. Asked me why I had the incubator locked up outside. "Was it trying to run away?"

Just remember birds like to peck at Styrofoam and sun accordingly.
