I became interested in chickens about a year ago, when my sister moved to the country and a hen we named Lucy, ran away from her home and decided to live in my sisters yard. Sadly, Lucy died after 6 months of knowing her. But she was a great ambassador, showing us how smart and funny chickens can be!

I researched chicken breeds and picked the ones that seemed to suit us best. We decided to keep 10 hens and no roosters as we worry that a roo would hurt our girls as we arent keeping more than 10.

I found a hatchery near me and went to visit 2 months ago. I ordered my chicks that day. 2 Buff Orps, 2 Cuckoo Marans, 2 EE, 2 BLRW, 1 Buff Brahma and 1 Dark Brahma. They assured me that I wouldnt get any roo's. They talked alot about these 2 old ladies they have that sort the chicks. They spoke of them as if they are some chick-sexing savants!! Can that be possible?

3 days ago I went to pick up my new peeps. The Buff Brahma didnt hatch as they had a disaster from a storm and a whole building fell down! They will get my last chick to me within a week.

So far so good. My peeps look healthy and are busy busy critters! I posted some photos and learned that my BLRW are "splash" variety! I cannot believe how fast these babies are changing, they are flapping their little winglets today. My 2 EE's have grown little cheek puffs, one has a longer puff than the other. The chicks dont seem to like me much yet, but Im sure that will change when they start getting yummy treats from me!

My Marans seem the most skittish and the BLRW's the most mellow so far. The BO are the bravest and most curious. I do a chick check every morning, checking for blocked up vents, or any other thing that doesnt look right.

Im learning so much from this forum and love looking at all the photos!
Thanks for reading my story so far,
Chickens Rock!
