Phil, times were very different back when you were growing up, and earning potential was extremely different. It's not always about kids being a setback either. Yes, there is a stark difference in income, and lifestyle, but had you not done what you did, things would have turned out a lot different for him too. Keep in mind, the only reason he's so successful is because of his upbringing, which is a credit to you.

Phil, this is a safe place to let things out. Better to air it with friends who are understanding and accepting, than the hold it in and have it fester. I find that when I get a chance to air out my "issues", they shrivel up and blow away a lot faster.

I know exactly why things ended up they way they did.... And who to blame.
Little things like leukemia and my wife's ten year trip to rock bottom didn't help.

BLAME?? Yeah you are right you should have turned down the opportunity to have leukemia and its near death sentence. That wasn't a good financial decision. Neither was your wife's decision to have a 10 year decline (of whatever sort).

There is NO blame. Money ISN'T everything. Do you have other kids? Are they swimming in money like your son?

Some people are just driven to make money. My step-sister's husband is one. He is ~63 Y/O and started making money at age 8. As a later teenager he loaned his folks money for a downpayment to buy a different house. He and SS have a $1M condo overlooking San Diego Bay. They rehabbed it, probably cost another $250K at least. I don't know how much he is worth but he has a business near San Diego and a manufacturing plant in China. He makes custom small parts for speciality machinery. He just set up some legal thing whereby he doesn't have to pay import tariffs on the parts he brings in from his plant in China to be sold to other companies. It is some sort of pass through and cost $100K to set up with the Feds. He is happy doing what he is doing. He will die working to make more money. I would not be happy working every day of the year even when on vacation for the purpose of keeping the business going to make more money.

Don't dump on yourself for not having the material things your son has (and potentially a lot of debt to go with them!)

Had an interesting conversation to say the least, cousin who is doing the funeral, (he's a minister) asked me some questions, I told him my answers and went on a rant, told him I didn't care if I saw any of the family again, and told him why, he didn't know what to say, I told him I didn't need or expect a response I didn't care any more. told him since my brothers over ruled my thoughts on dad's funeral and the uncles came in and sabotaged the others and aunts stabbed me in the back afterwards. I knew what to expect and I didn't care any more. I didn't tell him what I really felt, which is I want to go to their funerals to make sure they are dead. and also If I go to my mom's funeral just ask them why they waited until she was dead to see mom, and never came around for decades to see her when she was alive.

My daughter's new doctor called. The test results came in, and she's still got H. Pylori. Her GI doctor didn't prescribe correctly, nor follow up, and her old PCP didn't either. She's on Pylera for 10 days, and on the 10th day, has an appointment to go back to her doctor, and be tested again, because she may need several courses of treatment. Testing won't take as long now, since the doctor has everything set up for their office to do the testing now. I am so relieved this doctor has really gone to bat for her, and is actually addressing the situation.

That is great GAC. Seems the other doctors need to be reviewed. Maybe they shouldn't be practicing medicine.

another problem is the other Dr. might not have believed that H. pylori causes ulcers. It has not been long since it was announced as the standard and many Dr.s are resistant to new methods that proved they were completely wrong about a condition.

Alzheimer dementia may wind up being the same thing. There is some research that suggests that amaloid plaque is not a cause but a result of a viral infection in the brain. I can't wait to see how this all plays out

Ron, her first PCP is fresh out of medical school. She did not believe anything was wrong with my daughter, put it in her folder that she was a hypochondriac, and that she was fine. Finally, my daughter had a fit, so the doctor did a referral to a GI doctor for 3 visits. It included the initial visit with him, the upper GI, then the lower GI. It was during the lower GI that he discovered she had a huge infection in the colon. The tests confirmed it was H. Pylori. He put her on antibiotics, and Prilosec. He did not do any follow up visits, because she needed another referral from her PCP. When my daughter went back to get the referral, her PCP told her she would take it from there, and didn't give her the referral. She told her to continue with the Prilosec. She went back a few weeks later, with continued problems. Her PCP told her to continue on the Prilosec. She began having serious problems, including chest pain.

I suggested she change PCPs. She did. The new PCP is a bit older, and more experienced. The first thing the new PCP did was to take her off the Prilosec. She had been on it far too long, and was having major adverse reactions to it, including minor heart problems. She began improving immediately. Ok, the first PCP had made no mention of referring her to a GI doctor, no mention of the findings, nothing. When my daughter told the new PCP that she had proof, because she had the paperwork she had been given from the GI doctor, and the test results, the new PCP asked us to fax them to her. We did. In the meantime, she ordered bloodwork, and a type of breath test. This doctor seems very aware of what she's dealing with.
