Morning all! Just popping on while Honey is in the shower. He was on call Sunday, and was gone most of the day. Yesterday he rolled out of here at 6:30 and didn't get home until almost 9pm. Today, his first appointment is going to the Emergency room, his second has a doctor's appointment, and his third isn't answering the phone, so we're going out to breakfast
. I's hard having him gone so much, but I so appreciate how much he's stepping up and taking on extra work to help us get a new place. Playing the housewife doesn't come naturally to me, but I'm trying to run things here smoothly so basically all he has to do right now is work.
I got a new layer! I was thinking how, while I like having the Marans with the dark brown eggs, I sure miss my blue or green eggs. I always have a colored egg layer (or several) in the mix. Well, yesterday, I went out to the coop and there was a tiny little blue/green egg in the box! I've been keeping birds for 20 years, but having a confirmed new layer still makes me
.
The two older boys helped me cull three cockerels yesterday. Now down to two more of age, and two that need another month or so. I'm thinking I need to just get better at euthanizing them when their gender is apparent, cause I'm really not sure they're worth the feed and effort. If I were breeding heavier stock with more meat I'd be okay, but these little production guys just don't have much on the bones. I'd still like to get set up for a few small batches of Cornish cross this spring/summer, but we'll have to see how things are going with the housing.
Hope everyone is safe and snug at home.
