Rest in Peace -2017
I set my Marans eggs in lockdown (well, moved to the hatcher anyway) today. I try to candle them but I can never see a blessed thing. 8 eggs, hatch day is Tuesday. We'll see!

Hope you have a great hatch, Rachel! So hard to see in those dark eggs. I have Barnevelders due for someone else on Friday, they're dark, but not like Marans.I set my Marans eggs in lockdown (well, moved to the hatcher anyway) today. That is so sad!Bad news for me today.....it all started around 1am. I am a light sleeper and I heard what sounded like a cat screaming. The dog freaked out and growled. I went to the back door, opened it & flipped on the light, which would not come on, I heard something run & out the door the dog ran. I grabbed the flashlight, threw on my boots and ran out after the dog. After looking for about an hour and driving all around the neighborhood, I headed back home & there was the dog trotting back into the driveway......yeah!
Now for the bad part....I get up and go to work this morning. I was so tired from chasing Buddy, that I didn't realize one of my main roosters (King Tut) had not crowed. When I got home from work at 6pm, he always runs to the car and greets me. He was not there today. I searched the property & found his feathers everywhere.
. I hate predators. Not sure if it was a fox, coyote, or raccoon, but my CCL rooster is gone. I have 3 girls being shipped from California this month suppose to be bred with him. I have another CCL roo, he's just not show quality. And he's not King Tut. You'd think with over 100 chickens, I wouldn't get attached to one. Think again.![]()
On the bright side, our little dog is fine. Thank goodness. He definitely could've faired much worse as well.
That is so sad!
Are you going to get a bigger dog?
Growing up, we always had dogs out and never had a predator take a chicken.
I have 15 chihuahuas in different sections of my yard next to my fowl. They kill every snake that comes thru and let me know about other critters. Also have several labs that have actually killed a mink once.
We had an English Setter. For a few years, she was also a predator! Not getting a bigger dog just yet, We will always have predator issues probably. Location. Raccons, fox, coyote are very prevelient here. We live in a wooded 3 acres with 9 acres next to us of mostly untouched land and 6 acres on the other side. Basically, we live in the boondocks in the woods.
