Good news on the blood sugar front--apparently, it's the strips I'm using. Per my machine, I was 342 this am. Had labs done, they came back at 122

. Pulled out a new vial of strips, it's got me in the 180's mid afternoon---that's acceptable. I don't know what happened to the strips, but I'd sure rather it was my machine than my body lol. Labs also showed my potassium and magnesium are pretty low. Not sure how I can physically choke down more replacements of those. The triage nurse called and asked if I'm eating bananas---nope, too high in sugar. I'm taking 80mEq a day in replacement. Most folks take 20 or maybe 40---I think we're past the point where bananas are going to help.

Cow is still good as far as I know.

a quarter tsp of no salt will get you 650mg of potassium. That is a lot of bananas!

Make sure to keep having your blood checked for levels if you use it though.

I posted about this the other day--adding potassium is very important since we as Americans are usually low on it. I have read that we are up to 80% of us low on magnesium.

Well how do you fix magnesium?

It is a tough one to get from food. We used to get it from water but most cities remove it.

Chelated magnesium is cheap and you can get enough of it. The FDA put limits on potassium supplements which makes it very hard to get enough to raise your levels.

High magnesium foods include dark leafy greens, nuts, seeds, fish, beans, whole grains, avocados, yogurt, bananas, dried fruit, dark chocolate, and more. The current daily value (DV) for magnesium is 400mg.

Thanks for the list, Blooie. Appreciate it.

Here's the thing. According to an on-line calculator, say a banana has 400mg of potassium. I don't know why, but the replacement tabs come in milliequivalants, not miligrams. Anyway, 400 mg is the same as 10mEq. I'm currently taking 80 mEq of potassium tablets a day. My chemo brain says that's about the same as 8 bananas? Now, I like me some naners, but that's a bit much. Plus, with the low carb, lots of those things are a no-go right now. My body says I could get enough simply from taters

but I'd be in a carb coma.

Magnesium is cheap and available. I'm taking 400 mg twice a day. Problem is......magnesium is the main ingredient in, say Milk of Magnesia. Or Magnesium Citrate, one of the things they like to give you before a colonoscopy. That can cause some special issues all it's own

. I'm okay at my current dose, but if they try to bump it, I may never be able to leave the house

.

The thing is, my cyclosporine (my anti-rejection med) literally sucks the potassium and magnesium out of my system. That's why I have to supplement so heavily. Anyway, guess I'm not going to die cause no one ever called me back tonight. I'll just take extra and head to Mom's tomorrow

I remember right after my transplant I had the opposite problem.... Too much potassium...... The medicine you drink to get rid of it was horrible..... Maybe the worst thing I ever drank....they flavored it like maple syrup ..... It didn't help....... :(

Good morning all. Been a few days. For the past 2 weeks we have had trouble with Time Warner Cable. We have our phone, Internet & cable thru them. Phone cuts off, or doesn't work, tv and net freeze up then say No Signal, emails lost in cyberspace. Ugh!!! Finally after several calls fro. m us and the neighbors, they came out yesterday to fix......we will see. DH called them Wednesday night after neighbor came over to use our phone & no one could get a line out. He lit up the manager on the other end. We all pay them such outrageous prices for service that stinks.....anyway, that's the reason I haven't been on byc much.

Phil, when DH 1st came home from heart surgery they had him taking potassium. About 3 months later, they told him to stop & don't eat bananas. Too much potassium. To my knowledge he didn't have to drink the potion you had to. Sounds horrid.

We had a rabbit escape Sunday. Generally speaking, rabbits will return to their cage (or area) around feed time. Not this one. Missing 2 days. Then the 3rd night, there she was. We left her cage door open. Chickens were making theirselves at home, repurposing it for a nest box :lau. Now, to wait the 30 days to see just how much fun she had being out and about :/. Very happy a predator didn't get her.

You all have a great day! :D

@hbhoffman. How are things in your neck of the woods? Hollywood is doing great. She is the sweetest chicken. :D She doesn't know she is a chicken though. Likes to hang out with people whenever she can. :D
