My leukemia's back.

well......

Well..

That is what I get for not calling yesterday and asking for an update. I just thought that no news was good news and my mom would want to sleep.

Well, it turns out that they TRIED to put him under for 48 hrs on Saturday, and WANTED to do that. .. but couldn't.

His blood pressure was dangerously low, and medication to knock him out would have made it drop too low.

He went into septic shock and post-operational - pneumonia on Sunday.

He knew my mom yesterday.. couldn't talk since he is intubated, but could write her notes.

He didn't recognize my mom this morning, but that was probably due to the pain.. they can't properly manage his pain since all pain management will reduce his BP, and his BP is so low.

Today his temperature has gone back down, and this afternoon he woke up and recognized my mom.

Doctors said it isn't as bad as it looks (since he is now, even when awake, intubated as well as on a ventilator).

They think he will probably live... but in the next 3 days it will be clear one way or the other.
:(.......:hugs

Al, I'm so very sorry that your dad is suffering so. Lifting him and the rest of your family up in prayer. It's time for you to call in a few favors. See if there is ANYONE who can pick those kids up and play taxi for them. When my DH was in ICU, I called my parents back from Florida, because there was no way I could be at hospital to advocate for him, and be home to take care of my kids at the same time. They were an absolute blessing. Other folks stepped in to help with transportation, and even provide foster care for my dog.

Do what ever it takes to take care of yourself at this time, and insist that your Mom does the same. Stress is tough. And it's not a good way to loose weight.

so I told her if she couldn't find anything, not to worry, I would call the cancer center at the university, and schedule the tests there, or Lee Moffitt cancer center. Suddenly, there was an opening in Jan., and yes I can get the tests done back-to-back.

Yep, just one more example of our health CARE (should be called health DON'T GIVE A RIP) system in action. When I've needed services of a specialist, if the initial referral is not forthcoming with a reasonable appointment, I have a back up plan ready, and let them know that I'll be checking to see if their competitor can get me in sooner.

We have an advantage of 4 major hospital cancer centers here, and the largest university medical training facility in the state that also has a huge cancer treatment facility. Because all the hospital cancer centers are teaching facilities, they're all intertwined with the university. They are all in close proximity to each other, so distance is not a problem. I already knew there was no way they were so booked up that they couldn't accommodate me, given a month or two of prior notice. I also know I have super good insurance, and any of the facilities will go out of their way to accommodate me, so they can tap into my insurance. I'm not stupid enough to think there was a sudden opening.

I know their objective is to fill all their empty time slots, so it benefits them financially to schedule people piecemeal to fill the empty time slots. I need quite a few tests, not just one or two. My objective is getting in, getting them done quickly, and getting out. It was a simple misunderstanding of who's objectives she was to follow. She got it sorted out.

My oncologist always asks me where I want tests, procedures performed, etc. She is a staff oncologist for at least 2 of the hospital cancer centers, and teaches at the university too, so it doesn't matter where I choose to go, she can treat me, and get test results immediately from all of them. She knows I usually prefer to have my testing done over at the university, so she was surprised this time when I said I'd do it there.

Today, Dh overheard me telling my cousin I didn't want to go for all the testing on the date they scheduled me to have them done. In all the years I've been going through this, he's never once heard me complain about going for testing, until today. He insisted I call them, and cancel. I did. I asked if they had something available in Jan. that I could get them done back-to-back, instead of having to wait a couple hours in between tests. I was scheduled to go in at 8:00 a.m., and wouldn't get finished up until around 5:00 p.m. Nope, nothing open for Jan. I suggested she look at Feb. She said it was not looking good, but to let her keep looking. I suggested March, and she delayed in her response, so I told her if she couldn't find anything, not to worry, I would call the cancer center at the university, and schedule the tests there, or Lee Moffitt cancer center. Suddenly, there was an opening in Jan., and yes I can get the tests done back-to-back. I go in at 7:30 a.m., and I'll be out by noon. I am so relieved!
Good for you!
What a terrible day that would have been

in order to save money he still only has his learners permit... yeah, he is 19.

thanks everyone.

I have to drive up to Anchorage today ....
Don't tell the Insurance company that he drives the car. They do not need to know this at least in California. They can ask but you are not required to tell them. The only thing you can do is exclude a driver from insurance. Anyone driving your car is insured...At least here.

huh!

I will have to look into that, because that would be nice!

At a guess the insurance here should work the same, since here the insurance is on the car. In Texas the insurance is on the driver.

It sounds like you have similar consumer protection laws there. Insurance companies are not your friend. They are hard to work with in my experience
