My leukemia's back.

Is there an age cut off for donation ?

I do not believe so. I think the minimum weight requirement is 110#. The screening involves filling out an intake form, followed by a private interview with a nurse. After the interview, they do a quick finger or ear prick to be sure you are not anemic and can safely donate blood. Then, they make you comfy, insert the IV needle into a vein, and you rest comfortably while the bag gets filled. The actual filling of the bag takes 10 - 20 minutes. After that, it's cookies and juice time. You can donate every 56 days.

Good morning, Team Rachel. I'll be needing some help here. Christmas eve at my sister's house we got some troubling news about one of my nephews. Long story short: as a kid he was in a major automobile accident, multiple transfusions, Hepatitis C , liver transplant, and all has been well for many years. Now after all the years of anti rejection meds his kidneys are starting to fail as is his liver. He is on a list for a dual transplant, but ------------------
Prayers:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs

I have given donor OK. Not sure what parts are still useable. :lau:old
I've got ok on my drivers license. There is sooo much that could be donated. Interesting, my DH and I just had this coversation the other night. I told him I wanted to donate as much as I could, that was usable. Skin is in real need.

I donated every time they came to town, but was anemic the last three times I tried. (I was SO close. I think my hemoglobin was 12, and they want it at 12.5) I'm hoping to get back and try again. Just need to work on getting my iron up when I hear they're coming.

I myself have not donated in a few years. I feel that my blood levels and low blood pressure are not condusive to being a successful donor now. However, after my hubby's illness, I donated every 3 months to put back into the system double the number of units he required. I've also organized 3 blood drives.

yeah, low blood pressure does make it harder to donate.

Usually took me twice as long to donate as everyone else because my pressure is so low.

When I donated plasma (you can do that often... was that twice a week???) I would sometimes have to do jumping Jacks in the bathroom to get my pressure up high enough so that they could start.

Wouldn't they love for me to come in there, with 2 different blood thinner medications? They'd poke me and then be standing there holding a bucket!!

I know firsthand the blessings of blood donations....Linda had to receive blood twice, and when someone is on dialysis that's a risky proposition. Once she had to have a colonoscopy before they'd put her on the transplant list, and even though they took her off her thinners 2 weeks before they did it, she almost bled out from the removal of one, harmless little polyp. So the Good Lord keep those of you who can and do donate! When our Austin died, all of his organs, his eyes and his skin went to help others live.

@MrsMistyReal, welcome to the Waiting Room. Prayers are always abundant, freely asked for and received, and Rachel's legacy of caring, humor and courage live here, so you've come to the perfect place!
