My leukemia's back.

His mom is Bi-Polar or Manic Depressive ( I can't remember which one) so I am sure she has been influential in his ability to cope with this problem. He is a good kid and I am so glad that things are working out for him.
It is the same name. Bi Polar disorder is used now.

Dreamer, bi-polar is an older more generic name for it, I did a paper for a 100 level physiology class in school (in essence a freshman college level social studies elective not much more advanced than a high school class) and we had group project, the group I was in we did our own reports and I chose manic depression (since others wanted to do different forms of depression and I had heard of this and didn't really know anything about it) it is different from other depression forms that it can have a reverse effect on the person tho it may rarely happen that they go super happy and have a super high. like the joy a person can get from graduating from school when they never thought they could do it, getting married, having been told they were going to have a baby, you know a cloud nine on top of the mountain sort of the deal, but most of the time they are normal at best or they make Eor (how ever you spell winnie the poo's donkey friend) look happy.... the other end of it is the person is over happy and it causes almost as many problems because they are too happy (and usually are how can I say it politely, they like being happy with someone in a personal manner) and they also would give some symptoms similar to ocd they go on buying sprees like a hoarder hordes and that's the manic state and then there is some who swing like a yo=yo back and forth, this is more rare...

I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV but from memory they need adjustments in meds occasionally to keep an even keel so to speak, therapy helps some to at least keep some of the worst of it at bay, and lithium salts helps some but doctors don't perscibe it much (one source I remember reading said it had the same effects on the body as table salt (blood pressure, water retention issues) and the author could not find why since it seemed to be a silver bullet that seemed to cure or at least seemed to help a lot why the doctors couldn't prescibe blood pressure meds and water pills to counter the side effects...(.

One of my best friend's son had schizophrenia start while he was a sophomore in college - across the state from her and living in an apartment on his own. It got bad fast and when he was home for Thanksgiving that year, he threatened to kill himself - he actually grabbed the kitchen knife and headed upstairs to his room with it. After a year or so of legal trauma with a county prosecutor determined to make a name for herself, an understanding judge dropped all charges and they finally managed to get him the help he needed. He knows he needs to take his meds and has accepted that he will never finish college - too many triggers for him. He has an apartment in a small town about 20 minutes from his parents, and has been working steady at low pressure jobs.

I had a friend who was single and looking for a girlfriend. He met a girl at Walmart, she worked there, and he asked her out. They arranged to meet for drinks one night. Luckily, they drove separately and she had no clue where he lived because she scared the bejeezes out of him. the conversation went something like "I have a juvenile record, but that is sealed. I spent most of my young adult years in and out of prison/treatment centers. I am feeling much better now, so I am stopping taking my meds..."
Good for him for accepting the fact that he has to stay on his meds and for working not one, but two jobs instead of using it as an excuse not to work at all.

Unfortunately that is more common than one would think, is that they think they are better (maybe that's true) but they don't realize they need the meds to stay well, and if it's because they don't like the side effects or that they are on meds period, they don't realize they may be able to get off some of the meds or get different ones with fewer or less sever side effects if they speak to the doctor.
I had a step-dad like that. He was diagnosed with manic depression and would take his meds till he felt better, then would go off them. ("Only sick people take medicine, and I'm not sick.")

You described my former step-dad to a T. When he was up, he was WAY up. But when he was down... He loved and lived to hunt and fish, so when he would go on a buying spree, it was all hunting or fishing equipment. He had it all.

Many meds cause an big increase in weight - especially among Bi-Polars - so they go off when a boy/girl friend dumps them . Then big trouble comes back at them.

Knew one, Rene not only Bi-polar but, a very adept kleptomaniac. For some reason she was always hired quickly - and made it to her advantage. Worked in the jewelry dept. at a Walmart and was marking diamond earrings for $ 10. and taking them home. She also helped herself to random items all over the store. Don't know if she ever got caught.

There are different types of Bi-Polarism(?) some are mainly maniac, some mainly depressed aside from the general notion of maybe half and half.

If you re read my previous post it's generally one side or the other (to be considered bi polar you must have one complete side to side "flip" if you understand my meaning) and most stay on one side of the disorder. but there are some that are yoyo's that they continuously go back and forth between the ups and downs.....

Good morning folks!
and Diva the kleptomania would be part of the SOP of the manic side, not kleptomania specifically but risk taking, part of my earlier post listed some thing along the lines "overly friendliness" because that's one form of it "friendly" with many many people and strangers. I remind you I am using as PG language as I can so read between the lines...

I know what you mean by over friendliness, a man lost his wife of many years because he got overly friendly with too many"others." His kids had nothing more to do with him. When he stayed on his meds he was fine but, they would not give him another chance. I don't know how it all played out.
