My leukemia's back.

Teaching kids to cook is a really wonderful gift. I treasure the time that I spent with my Mom in the kitchen.
One day I was doing a quick shopping trip through the store and I saw this young man with a basket just standing and staring at the pasta section. Knowing that I sometimes have a hard time finding the type of pasta I want, I asked if I could help him find something. Turns out, he wanted to make a "fancy" dinner for his girlfriend but had no clue what to buy and how to do it. I took my little notebook out of my purse and took him around the store buying ingredients and writing down the instructions for a Spaghetti and Meatball dinner that was sure to impress. The first line said "fill kitchen sink with hot soapy water, wash dishes as you use them". The last line read "finish the remaining dirty dishes as the spaghetti boils for 7 minutes".
I happened to bump into him about a week later at the same store and got to meet his girlfriend. She showed my her engagement ring and thanked me for helping him out with the surprise romantic dinner and instructions to keep a clean kitchen.

Loved that story! You did a real good deed that day :clap

My friends kids never learned to cook - now that they are on their own it all fast food and frozen pizzas. They are so excited to be invited over for a home cooked meal.
My friend’s husband never learned how to cook. Couldn’t even make a frozen pizza. I vowed that my sons would learn to cook and do laundry so my future daughters in law would like me.

Being able to do things around the house are a good way of making "nice" with the future DIL's. Way to go!

My sons started doing their own laundry when they could reach the knobs on the machines. Learning to cook was kind of hit or miss, they learned enough to not starve :p

My Junior Chefs, Evan and Katie, will be here making sides today. They’ll tackle my cranberry relish, the pies, the cheese ball, the baked beans, and the stuffing, and learn some new kitchen skills to add to their growing experience. They love to cook, and I love to teach them. First thing they learned was “clean as you go” so I don’t even have to worry about a big mess in this tiny kitchen.

Katie spent the night here last night, and helped me get the house ready since I’m still limited on what I can do and Grampa is out of town. So she made dinner: Steamed new potatoes, corn, and catfish nuggets. Mmmmm, so good! She’s really pickier than Evan about her Mise en place - he’s more a “prep as I need it” kinda cook! In this tiny kitchen it will probably be chaos, but better today than tomorrow.

Love you all...if you’re traveling, travel safely. And have the Happiest Thanksgiving ever!!
How fun! Sounds like all you’re going to have left for tomorrow is to pop the turkey in the oven!

What a great story!

Good thing I learned to cook or I would have been the "TV Dinner King" when I graduated college and moved to Vermont. Lived on my own until DW came around and that was 10 years later. Of course DW has always been more of a baker than a dinner maker, gotta admit 39 years of being the primary cook is getting sorta old.

DS 2 loves to cook and is pretty good at it. DIL is happy with the arrangement.
