My little Angel died today

She got overheated about 3 weeks ago. I kept her in the house for a couple of days and she seemed ok. I've been trying to gove them an extra tub of water and frozen melon and fruit everyday, but today I found he dead in the nesting box. Any other ideas to cool them off?

I'm so sorry you lost your girl. I helped dig holes in a shaded part of my run. They love the dirt holes to lay in when it's hot. Also I will hold them and dunk their feet in cool water for a few seconds and they usually stop panting after that.

I am wetting the run down every morning with a small lawn sprinkler. They dig themselves a hole and hunker down into it. On the worst days I put a 10# block of ice on top of cinderblocks sitting in a mortar-mixing pan of water which acts as an evaporative cooler.

The baby chicks have a fan going about 12 hours a day in the coop and bowls of ice in their kennel.

My girls have been doing fine -- not eating much or laying at all but otherwise doing fine -- for a couple weeks of sustained temps from the mid-90s to 120˚.

So sorry you lost one. Hope the rest do better!

Sending my deep sympathy. I know how sad it is to lose one when you're doing everything you can to help them. Sometimes, something is wrong that we just don't see, can't tell, and cannot prevent - she could have had some other issue internally that the heat exacerbated. Giving them cold treats, cold water to drink, shade to get in, cool spots to lay on, and such is great, but it doesn't always mean we can save them all. Sometimes, no matter what we do, we lose one.

Shade from bushes, trees, shade cloth, several shaded water bowls and a wide pan of water to cool their legs are helpful during hot westher. Sorry for your loss.
