My Little Eggy

um I don't know but i think theres something because how would it hatch more

and when i got the egg the coop was dirty and it smelled so there should be something in it because in the last hour it opened more the top might come off tonight and it might hatch all the way tomorrow

Now I'm beyond confused. You say the coop was dirty and smelly when you took the egg. So the egg was in a coop and not an incubator?

Progress of a Rotten Egg:
The reasons an egg will crack, and then crack even more and start to expand more aren't just from hatching. A rotten egg will usually "weep" before it cracks. Weeping looks like little spots or specks of tree sap or dried honey. After it's been weeping for a while, without being removed, it will crack. After the crack, over time it will expand and crack more as the rottenness inside the egg begins to expand outward.

I'm not saying you have a rotten egg, you might have a very healthy chick in there - and for your case, I sincerely pray that is true.

It just seems odd to me that 10 hours later it's still not out, when ours were out in less than hour once they got that big of a crack in the shell.

Ugh - I really wish someone ELSE would post on this thread - someone with experience (no idea where everyone is, but there are viewers [lurkers] here who aren't posting).

its ok i think its rotten so ima throw it out maybe because it smells bad and it has a green bubble in the middle but it looks like it has a vain should i crack it open?

I'm not going to advise you to crack it open on the very slim chance it might be a chick - and I wouldn't want you to harm a chick because I said I thought it was rotten. Do I think it's an exploding rotten egg? Yes, I do - but that doesn't mean it is. I'm not there and I can't see it with my own eyes - just pictures.

Do you have a parent, legal guardian or older sibling around you who can help you distinguish rotten versus chicklet?

I never said I knew how old you were, just that you're young. ;)

I'm sorry your egg wasn't a chick, and that it was rotten. Don't give up - this was your first try. Hatching chicks isn't easy, and homemade incubators are really hard to make with precision, and have the exact temperature that is needed the entire incubation. It's pretty rough getting humidity to be where it should be, too. It's a process.

I still recommend you head to the library that is nearest to your house, maybe go with a friend...and check out all the books you can find about building incubators, hatching eggs, raising baby chicks, etc. I have books too, and while I LOVE this website - I still go to my books to verify things. Plus, there's nothing in the world like the smell that comes from the pages of an old library book.

Good luck next time around!

PS - you might try a feed store near you to see if they have any fertilized eggs for you to try next time!
