We purchased a couple of Leghorns from TSC last spring. She is now laying eggs that are not white which caused me to further investigate her breed. She’s all black with almost a rainbow coloring. Can anyone confirm she’s a Leghorn or a different breed?

Yeah... the most common coloring for leghorns is white.and they lay white eggs... so not a leghorn. But I'm not sure what type it is...

Eta: The black comb and wattles make me think Ayam Cemani...

Ayam Cemani or Swedish Black? Those are the only ones I know of that are entirely black including wattles and comb. Looks like a bit of red in the wattle, so maybe a mix. I'm leaning towards Swedish Black based on the body shape.

**Edit** Either way, a really lucky accidental buy from Tractor Supply!

A Leghorn always has white earlobes! A leghorn typically has a trim build too.

An Ayam Ceymani is more trim, in general. Recently saw a few at a chicken show and was surprised at the trim and smaller stature than I was expecting for an AC, but the owners verified that they tend to be a more trim build. I'm not knowledgeable with the breed, so I can only share what they told me. Yours looks larger/more filled out than the AC females I saw, so maybe a mixed breed bred for the coloration (you know how the hatcheries market their mixes using "EE" or "OE" etc). Maybe its the hatchery's version of AC.

Irregardless, she looks healthy and pretty!

Can Black Australorps or Jersey Giants have a dark face like that? I don't think so, but don't know those breeds very well either.

I thought Ayam Cemani and Swedish Black were supposed to lay white eggs?

That is a pretty chicken, but quite a puzze as well! She's not any of the most common breeds, or we would have all recognized that already :)
