My little mallard duck is dying....Please help i feel helpless:(

Oh thank you for checking for me! I've got a silly question now....how is nares pronounced? With a long E?
She's resting now so I'll save the trauma of cleaning out her nares till a LIL later! Again I thank you so very much for all your help! It's much appreciated!

I just found this thread so please forgive my butting in with some advice. I raise Mallards and have never had to use sugar water with any that have had problems. I have used Sav-A-Chick vitamins in their water, but the Poultry Drench will work as well. In an emergency or with wry neck, the Poly-Vi-Sol vitamins can be a great help as the poor little ones need large doses of the water and fat soluble vitamins to straighten out. I don't think either of you need them for your babies. Get a poultry vitamin and the poor little one who was caught in the filter could use a probiotic as well. If the pool had chemicals in it, even if left over from last year.....most likely, most, if not all of the flora in it's gut has been destroyed. Clear water or with the addition of the vitamins as already mentioned and for the 'pool baby' probiotics as well. For the one with the build up around it's nares, I would use a mild ACV and warm water solution to wash them and as already mentioned, give a container deep enough for it to wash it's bill.

I welcome any and ALL butting in haunted! I'm grateful for ALL advice! I stopped the sugar water. The poly I just started, it's all I have at this point. I'm waiting on a lil guidance for dosage. I read the "one drop in the bill" BUT the dropper is pretty big and dispensing ONE drop in the bill is scary.....what if too much goes down the bill? I'd prefer just putting it in her water. As you guys can tell I'm a big scary cat when it comes to my babies I'm so afraid of hurting them. Anyway a HUGE thank you to ALL who have given advice! I'll wait on a dosage for the poly and keep ya'll posted!

I did it! I cleaned out her nares! However, I can still hear what us humans would call a "stuffy" or "clogged" nose sound coming from her. She's still open mouth breathing, mainly when she's sleeping. Her bowel movements are normal now and she's trying to groom, she's just pretty unstable yet and tips over pretty easily. All in all she's definitely holding her ground and making slow but sure progress!

I wouldn't use more than 2 drops first dosing then 1 drop there after.

They're so tiny that the stuff that came out just looked like a teeny tiny piece of dirt?
Haunted.....do you mean one "dropper FULL" or literally one DROP? And do you mean in her little plastic waterer or down her bill?
Thank you kindly for all your help!

1 drop. You can try to 'drip' this onto it's bill and see it it will take it in but ducks don't always do that. A better way for me has been to take something like a shot glass, put the drops of vitamins into that and a bit of water. The glass should be maybe 1/4 full. You can then dip it's bill into this, over and over if it is reluctant to drink. Either way will work as long as you can get them into the baby. One caution, please, vitamins are vitamins. All animals need them no matter what species, but different species need different amounts of the vitamins available in their feed or in this case the Poly. The fat soluble E, A, in the Poly are at much higher levels than normal for a duckling. Short term, okay, long term, over a week, you are borrowing trouble. Too much of a good thing can cripple or kill and these fat soluble can build up in the system of a sick animal quickly if they are not active. The B vitamins can even build to toxic levels if the water intake isn't suffcient to wash the excess out.

In an emergency or in the case of wry neck, yes, Poly can be a true lifesaver, but it is always better to use something meant for the species you are trying to help. Okay, sorry, off my soapbox now....

That's why I like Poultry Nuri Drench it is made for poultry. I have baby vitamins in my first aid kit for my flock but have never used it. when it say's 1 drop in the bill they mean at the front of the bill not down the throat.
