Hi there,
My computer hard drive crashed and I'm awaiting a new one. Just hopped on to check on things. I'll get some new pics of Nan soon. She/he? looks pretty much the same as last week. Still has a silly fuzzy head and neck. Ridiculous! We've been reeling from the death of Nan's broody Mother this week. We had some workers fix our sprinkler system that has it's controls in the chicken yard. I didn't realize he left a lot of debris such as rubberized caulking and electircal tape all over the ground when he was finished. Marilla must have got a chunk of caulk stuck in her throat and was dead in minutes. So sad for her and so preventable. Believe me, nobody feels too sorry about a dead chicken in the 'real' world! We did find a little humor in how to handle her remains, but decided to bury her as the kids were pretty upset about it. So sad. I'll get some new Nanner pictures up when my revamped computer comes back from the store. Thanks again for all your kind words and being such Nan-fans. S/he's one of a kind for sure!

So sorry to hear that. Poor Mirilla. I've lost two chicks this week, within hours of each other and people just don't get it when you cry about them. I have a little graveyard behind the house for chickens and we went and bought the most beautiful rose I could find and planted the bush in the middle of the graveyard. For all of them. It really helped me deal with the losses.
Good luck with your little one. The only thing on my midget chicken that grows at the moment is her eyes. She looks weird, but I LOVE HER.

I have had a similair experience before. I had a little chick that I hatched, and I named him Tablespoon. He would always be the first one to the food, and always chirping loudly unless he was being cuddled

. He feathered out a little bit on his wings, and then did not grow any more, did not get any more feathers, while his other siblings got bigger and bigger every day. When I needed to put the chicks outside because they were outgrowing their small inside rabbit cage, but i kept her inside because i was afraid that she would be cold or get smushed. I kept her inside with a sibling so he didn't get lonley, his roomate was a barred rock, and very gentle with him. She would wiggle himself between the wing and body of the other chick, he loved to feel cuddled. Sadly, while outside (It was a very very warm day) with his larger siblings, playing, he was smushed by the larger chicks under the shade of a box and died Another little problem besides Tablespoon's small size, was that he got food pieces stuck in his nose, how he did that, I don't know, i was just worried because he breathed through his mouth, not his nose because it was plugged, and i was afraid he would get an infection or something.

OMG, I'm so sorry to hear about Marilla.

(Nan does have roo legs! Big, bright and yellow!)

Yep, I'm sure he's a little roo. That would explain all the coloring in the body and the blue tail. He's still small, but keeping up in growth with the second batch of pullets that are 8 weeks younger than him. He's still got a wee bit of a fuzzy head and neck. Crazy. I'll keep him as long as he doesn't create too much drama guarding the flock or crowing the neighborhood awake. So far he still peeps like a chick. We'll take it day by day. With his curly toes, I worry anyone else would probably cull him to keep him from breeding with their stock. A deformed roo is of no value to most people. We'll see how it goes....

Wow they say you can tell a roo by slower maturity. But NAN sure took that to heart.
