I don't remember exactly how old this little guy is, but around 10 weeks, I think. When I went out to feed them this morning, I heard a terrible croaking/squawking noise coming from the region of their chicken tractor. I have it covered with a tarp to help keep in the warmth during the cooler nights, so I couldn't see what was making the noise. I just assumed it was some large bird of prey, camped out in the alder trees at the edge of the yard. There often times are large birds there, waiting for a chicken to escape the pen so they can snatch it.
Any bird would have been scared off at my approach though, I would guess, so I think it was my little roo's first attempts to crow. Weird sound!! I do have a three and half month old Silkie roo in there too though, so I suppose it could be him. Sigh.
I guess it's finally time to build the cockerel tractor and move them away from the house so the noise doesn't drive my non-chicken-loving fiance out of his mind. Naturally, this is the first morning inn a long time that he's had insomnia and the roos start crowing today!
