My mam wont let me have another rooster, read reson

My neighbor's old rooster was killed by a young rooster (his son) last year when the young one reached maturity and challenged the old one. They fought constantly until the young one finally succeeded. This may be the exception to the rule, but it could happen. Oh, and there were plenty of hens, and the chickens are all free ranged with lots of space.

There is no true/false; you won't know for sure until you get another rooster. They MIGHT fight and it could result in a dead rooster, or they MIGHT get along fine. I know some folks with flocks that have had it go either way. It depends on how they're introduced, the dispositions of the roosters themselves, how they pecking order falls out, how many hens you have, and how much space they have access to.

Best thing to do is plan for the worst. IF they fight, then what would you do?

i dont know how big the feild is but you could easily fit 100 or more in, if i got one what i would do is put the rooster in a shed together to meet each other with out the hens being involved then after they fight let them make friend then put them back with the girls, and i have 11 hens but my cockerel only mates with 5 paticular ones, the five top hens the queen hen and her best friend are his favouraites the the other 3 come close being then the 6 left out ar eoecked by him and stuff

I don't think that separating the roos from the flock and isolating them together in a shed is a good idea. You'd mess up the flock's whole pecking order and isolate two birds (both strange to each other) in a confined space where neither could escape. That's sounds like a recipe for a nasty battle.

No matter what you do, there is the possibility that they could STILL not get along and will STILL fight each other. What would you do then? You need to have a back-up plan to deal with this if potential situation if you want any hope of convincing your mam to let you get another roo.

if only i had a broody hen then if she hatched something i could keep the cockerel off her

Is it possible for you to have separate housing for your roo and his 5 favorites, and a new roo with the other 6? A coop and run for each, letting each group take turns free ranging? That is alot of extra work and expense, but a workable solution if possible.

i dont like them being in a coop i just might find some one that will take the cockerel back if it dosent work out?

You should find someone that would be willing to take it back or give it a home if it doesn't work out before you ever commit to getting one. It'll save yourself and your chickens a whole lot of stress (and possible injuries).
