I often have birds making nests on the lintel of the gate to my back yard. I like birds, they can nest wherever as long as its not part of a ventilation system. But in April 2024 I was looking out the window and saw a crow scare two robins away from this lintel, so I went out to check; I found two robin eggs left behind. I assumed the crow scared the parents away to get at the eggs so I thought I should keep the eggs safe and return them to the parents. I know not all birds are like chickens, most birds are very needy and need to be mouth-fed, and neither I nor my chickens can provide that but to keep the eggs warm, I put them under my then-brooding silkie hen. After about a half hour of waiting I went out to collect the robin eggs to return them but much to my dismay, they had vanished with no sign of either yolk nor shell.
This silkie will sit on a brahma hen's eggs, significantly larger than her own, but correctly identified a robin's eggs as being intrusive and decided to eat them.
I guess I won't make that mistake again.
