I guess one question that hasn't been asked is, did you know all along that they were intended as food? Their being mutts doesn't make your feelings any less significant.

I guess that changes things in my opinion. Either you and your mom were not communicating, and you did not understand her plans, or she changed her mind about having them, and did not give you the opportunity to find homes for them. Or something similar. You REALLY need to have a long talk wth your mother. Some may find fault with this, but it sounds to me like she treated you very unfairly. They were not intended as food (I don't know anyone who raises bantams as food--not that they cannot be, but that is certainly not their purpose as a breed), yet she chose to process them, apparently without giving you a fair amount of warning. In my opinion, unless your family is severely poor and without food, that was, at the very best, unkind.
