"My mommy says your chickens have fleas..."

I've never gotten fleas or mites from my chickens or ducks, I did however get fleas from a fellow teacher about 4 years ago! She moved into a new apartment and the previous tenants evidently had a problem, and our teacher came to school with little bites on her, she was in the room next to me and guess what? Later that same day I had a few little bites, ok, no biggie, could be anything out here in the desert. She came in the next day and told us all what happened and we had to go to the DR for some cream and such and then we had to send home letters with all the students about it!!!
Tell her that her mommy brought home fleas from work, not her from your chickens.

While that is funny, and it is, maybe you shouldnt make mommy look bad.

I tell what struck me is the fact that a couple mosquito bites seems like such a big deal. While none of us wanted our children to get bit all the time its just gonna happen, unless they are x-box 360 kids.

I hope the little girl will be able to continue to come play with you and your chickens. I bet mommy likes the time off when she is playing with your flea bag chickens.

before you get all upset, I said that last line laughing. Good luck with the little girl.

Have you invited 'mom' over to see your chickens? Like others have said, it is probably ignorance on her part. Once educated she might change her mind.

Good luck, I was also raised with the 'chickens are dirty' train of thought and have since been educated!

I don't even think dog (cat) fleas even LIKE chickens' blood. But they for sure like my ankles when I have white sox......I'm stopping to get some DE on the way home today!

I'm tired of being chewed on, and the blood loss is making me weak....

Most pests are fairly specific; that is, dogs and cats can't get feather lice and chickens don't get fleas. I'd just make a note to self not to take my animals to any vet that "mommy" worked for.

I think everyone else is right, "mommy" has fleas.

I don't think she probably intends to put the word out that your flock is dirty but rather trying to get her child to stay away from them. I have one in our family who doesn't like the kids playing with chickens because 'they have lice'. Well, my chickens don't and I just ignore those comments because I know the real deal with chickens. But, this is someone elses child and you have to respec the way they want to raise their child. You could try talking to her and explaining to her that yours are very clean and healthy chickens and you have noticed her daughter really loves them and you would like her to be able to enjoy them....etc...stuff like that...It may not work but worth a shot for the little girl.
