Glad to be here and find others who are so obsessed with chickens no matter what breed. I've been raising chickens on and off 18 years. Stopped only when I couldn't take them with me to college and a little tiny appartment. But can't keep me away or them away since I now have my own place with lots of land.

How do you control yourself from not wanting more? I think I'm getting in over my head but I still want more. I've already this season have had 6 hatches and now I have another broody hen. I haven't given anything to the broody hen trying to figure out what to do. I just feel like if I don't give her any eggs its a waste. But at the same time my husband literally just made the chicken coop bigger a week ago and I'm thinking it needs to be bigger.

Thanks for watching me,
Rosalie in Colorado

You're right, it's a shame to waste a broody. Some peeps here sell hatching eggs...

Hi Rosalie! Yeah, when I got my first flock of 5 pretty hens, I swore up and down that I would not become "one of those people" who joke about chicken math. Of course I ate my words within a year...lol. Just last week my sister-in-law asked me "So how many do you have now?" I told her not to ask, because what I don't put a number to I can't feel guilty about. And the number is 24!! But 11 of those are seramas, which is the smallest chicken breed, and it takes about 6 seramas to make a full sized LF bird, so it's really like 15 chickens. And 4 of those 15 are regular bantams (silkies and d'uccles), so that's kind of like having 2 LF rather than 4 bantams, whice brings me down to 13. See how chicken math works???? I'll just tell people I have 13 chickens...lol. I'm probably not helping your addiction, am I???

The proper response is
"Hi Rosalie. Admitting you have a problem is the first step."

Welcome Rosalie, Funny how addictions work. I only wanted 10 little hen chicks, I ended up with 43 and graduated to ducks as well. Started with just one that needed a home so I gave him one. But he was lonely..... so I got him 4 friends. Then, someone thought I needed 8 more that they had and wanted to get rid of.....so ......I took them. Then my son found 4 more that were really pretty and brought them home as well.
What will happen when they all reproduce??? So glad I don't smoke or do drugs. I can't fight addiction

It's nice to know that I 'm not the only person in Colorado who is a chicken addict. My kitchen is filled with chicken decorations. I would highly recommend reading Chickens Magazine from Hobby Farms. You would probably be able to get it at your local farm store or supermarket.
