Your neighbor may be a good source of info.

Have you asked him for advice and shared your plans with him? Surely he'll let you check out his coop and setup. You will likely pick up a bunch of tips.

As many chicken folks, your neighbor may take an active interest in your chickens and success, too. You could even end up with a few chicks, if you ask.

Ask if he uses DE for lice. Maybe he doesn't know about it?

You can always get sexed chicks and then you won't have a roo. I don't have a rooster, but I don't have 2.5 acres. I have a backyard flock with just six girls. Whichever way you choose to go, just go for it. This is all a learning experience and you might find when you have your own flock and rooster that the other birds don't even come over anymore.
