My new babies are dying!! : (

@pfields
Thank you : )
And yes I do have space ready in the yard out back. I just thought they would be fine inside for a couple of weeks until it warms more at night outside. Maybe not though? I could let them take over the master bath if need be.

I have 32 five week old chicks right now, 24 that I ordered from Ideal and 8 that I hatched. I started them out in my bathtub on a heating pad.
We've had extra warm weather for February here in Texas so I was able to move them outside to their brooder/coop sooner than expected. I have a heat lamp in it that I can use if the temp goes down. They're now going outside in a small covered fenced area during the day.

We have hawks so our whole backyard is covered by netting to protect our older chickens.

Oh you poor thing! So many losses first time out of the gate : ( stupid USPS!!!
They don't care. Well ok the company doesn't care. But the employee here in my town cared and if it wasn't for her ALL my babes would have died. Bless her!

Oh no!! I'm so sad to report that of my three sick babies, the little chocolate chick has just passed in my arms. He was breathing and comfy and breathed slower and slower. Then...nothing. Just a final exhale and his sweet spirit went away from here. I denied it at first, trying to jostle him out of it. His best mates were still peeping. But no. I've killed him. And don't judge me but I admit I even tried tee tiny CPR on the little guy to no avail. I'm sure I must've looked a sight but who cares right? Just on the off chance... : (

Oh, this is my second year as a chick mom, I didn't lose anyone the first year, this is the first time they shipped for me. Thanks for the kind words. Know that you have done your best, and I would have paid to see chick CPR. Once your girls are bigger, you will be able to get past the losses. I have a full tme job keeping on top of my job as a chickie mom to 52 right now!

You didn't kill him, he just wasn't strong enough to survive the stress of shipping. Even when you hatch your own chicks, you loose some. Some chicks just don't make it. That's just how it goes. I've had to put weak/sick/malformed chicks down, myself. It's just part of raising chicks.
