After losing one of my roosters, I wanted to try and hatch his babies. Unfortunately, he only had one hen, Leia, who is laying, but she only laid one egg since losing him, besides a few soft shell eggs. She was very close to him, and I think it was hard on her to lose him.

I put the one egg I got from her and another egg from a different rooster, Caramel, in the incubator.
In another unfortunate event, the embryo passed sometime between day 14 and day 18 candling. However, Caramel's baby hatched yesterday around 5pm, slightly early on day 20.

New baby of course needed some buddies, so I picked up some pullets, a Buff Brahma and an Easter Egger

A little later in the year than I prefer, but I love having chicks again

Adorable chicks! Sorry about the loss of your rooster, he was a handsome guy.
Thank you, he was definitely one of the good ones, both looks and personality. I actually hatched him from an egg and had to help him hatch - will never regret giving any animal a chance to live a good life

Sorry about your rooster and the embryo. Your boy was strikingly good looking.

Congrats on Caramel's baby and on finding some suitable companions for the little one! Having chicks is wonderful no matter when, isn't it?
Thank you. It really is. I love seeing their little personalities emerge

Buff Brahma, who I have named Bonnie. I think she's the oldest based on feather growth. Definitely sleeps less than the other two as well. She used to chirp loudly when they would both be sleeping, but I think she's gotten used to it now, and occasionally, she joins them
