Well I am going to have my coop completely finished BEFORE I even get my chicks so I think I am a shoe in for defying chicken math as well.
I honestly have no desire to keep more than 3 hens. I feel like you can't spend quality 1 on 1 time and form a bond with pets if you have more than a few. That is what my hens will be. Pets. Pets WITH perks! I also do not feel like playing in chicken dookie up to my ears every day for the next 10 years...
For anyone that's interested, now is the time to tune in to watch a newb defeat chicken math.
As for the roosts, those are just little 1x1s. I'm raising my chicks in the hen house so I wanted a little "learning" roost for them. Once I pick my 3 hens and rehome the rest I'll be pulling that whole roost out and running a removable 2x4 the length of the coop. I'm also going to wire over the next boxes until they are ready to lay.
Good call on the board to keep the eggs from falling!
If it were me I would get some clear packing tape and tape over the sharp edges, it may take several layers but it would save you from bleeding all over your eggs!
Thanks for all the compliments! I'm glad you guys like it!
My hardware cloth came in the mail today, hurray! I finished painting the run and I'm 95% done painting the inside of the hen house. I'll post new pics tomorrow.
I used to run a home daycare through the Air Force and they had us tape the ends of our metal gutter downspouts with duct tape so children didn't fall on them and get cut.
What about using the rubber trim you get to put on the edge of your door to prevent dings that you can get from Auto Zone. That would be easy to put on the edge and give you a "bumper" so you would not get cut. You could also use small "auto hoses" with a cut in them to make a bumper the same way. Either one shouldn't be too expensive. Hope the ideas help.
