My new English angora bunny! *Warning* new adorable pics

RabbitMage - I am going to be going to the Cali State Fair for sure, but still trying to figure out how to get into the Stockton show. I really want to go. Let me know how I can, please!

FrenchHen - I successfully "taught" him how to get the dust bunnies from under the bathroom sink. He had gone under there when I left the bathroom and when I came back, he pushed it out to greet me!

Well, I recommend you join the California Rabbit Shows group here (you'll need a Yahoo account) http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/CaliforniaRabbitShows/ it's a good source of information, and most of the show catalogs get uploaded to that site.

To find out about and enter shows the more traditional way, you want to go to http://www.arba.net and click on "Shows". It gives you an option to search, but I usually just click on CA and see what's coming up.

I'll go ahead and use the listing for Stockton as an example.

9/19/2009 BIG VALLEY RA (OPEN) (STOCKTON) DOLORES MORRIS, 15859 HENRY RD, ESCALON, CA 95320-9426 209.838.7881 [email protected]
9/19/2009 BIG VALLEY RA (YOUTH) (STOCKTON) DOLORES MORRIS, 15859 HENRY RD, ESCALON, CA 95320-9426 209.838.7881 [email protected]
9/19/2009 BIG VALLEY RA (YOUTH) (STOCKTON) DOLORES MORRIS, 15859 HENRY RD, ESCALON, CA 95320-9426 209.838.7881 [email protected]

9/19/2009 is the date the show is being held. "Big Valley RA" is the name of the club putting on the show. Stockton is the location of the show itself. Dolores Morris is the contact person or show secretary for this show. She's the person you want to get a hold of! The information following that is her mailing address, phone number, and e-mail address. You can write, call, or e-mail her to give her your information and let her know you want a show catalog when they're available.

Open and Youth are the age groups allowed to show. Open is for everyone, there is no age limit. To show in youth you need to be 18 or under. The reason there are four listings for the same show is because it's what's called a "Double Youth, Double Open" show. There are two youth shows and two open shows in the same building in the same day. This is how most shows are here in CA.

The show catalog usually comes out 3-4 weeks before the show and has all the good information. It will tell you where the show is (usually at the fairgrounds), reviews the rules and policies of the show, gives a list of judges that will be there that day, tells you when the entry fees are due and how much they are. It will also include an entry form for you to fill out and mail. Pay attention to the entry deadline! Snail mail entries are usually due 1 week before the show, e-mail entries are usually due mid-week before the show.

More and more we're seeing catalogs being e-mailed or posted online. It's a little faster, a little cheaper, and it saves paper.

Some secretaries will even allow you to e-mail your entries. If you e-mail them, you have to pay the secretary at the show before the show begins.

Stockton usually has a good draw of Angoras, I know Betty Chu who has some of the best English Angoras in the nation usually shows up, and Tracy Rios who has lovely Satin Angoras is usually there. There are some other folks who I don't know, and they usually set up by one of the doors to groom their rabbits. It's fun to watch them using the blowers.

Let me know if you have any more questions!

Edit: Something else to keep in mind. The 2009 ARBA National Convention is being held down in San Diego this November. It's a bit of a drive but you really couldn't ask for it to be closer. It was held there in 2001 and drew over 14,000 rabbits. Even if you don't intend to show, it's awesome to go and have a look around. You'll be hard pressed to find more rabbits and more rabbit people and more rabbit 'stuff' in one spot. Plus the Del Mar fairgrounds are beautiful, there's a lovely beach practically across the street, and San Diego/Del Mar is a lovely place to explore.

I've got four rabbits, but they're just regular brown bunnies and Holland Lop; are the Angoras smarter than other breeds? Yours have such a look in their eyes; almost dog or cat-like.
