I acquired a bantam hen and rooster a couple of weeks ago which I added to my flock of pullets. My flock free ranges while i am at home. Yesterday, I was thinking to myself 'why did I get this rooster, all he does is eat and crow and is of no use'. However, today, about 4:30, I was inside my house and heard him outside pitching a fit. I walked to the window and saw a raccoon eyeing my chickens and the rooster was trying to protect them. The raccoon was less than 5 feet from my flock. This bantam rooster was protecting pullets that are twice his size. I ran outside and scared the raccoon off. This rooster-that I did not want or need, and that I thought was a free loader-is my new favorite chicken and has earned extra treats from me.
