I just put up my new coop and placed my birds in their comfortable new home. I am so excited that I finally am a chicken owner. The pin is 4x16 and the coop is 4x5. I have 2 barred rocks, 2 cookoo marans, 2 wellsumers, and 2 golden sex links.

How are you liking the water contraption? Linking of doing something similar.

I love it! The chickens get fresh water and I dont have to fill a dish everyday. It's called the chicken fountain and costs about $30 with shipping. It's well worth the money.

Your coop is on the small side for 10 birds. Rule of thumb is 4-5 sq.feet per bird inside the coop (excluding nest boxes and roosts) The outside run should provide 10 sq.feet per bird.

Beautiful set-up!!!!

Can you close the door at night? I can't see whether you have a pop door or not. Maybe it's inside?

If you don't have one, you need one, your chickens are not safe without one. A predator can rip through the chicken wire and walk right into the coop while they are sleeping and have a free meal.

Hello
Very nice coop. I'm sure your chickens are going to be very happy with their new home! I live just south of Portland. May I ask what you have in your run? Living in Oregon you know it gets very wet. We are just finishing our coop, then starting on the run. I just wonder what will work best with all of the rain we get.

Hello Pollo,

I have pine shavings that I bought from Linnton Feed. I've been thinking about putting an extended corrugated ruff to keep dryer, but so far it hasn't caused any moisture issues. I do clean it a couple times per week. I'm still learning and might change to straw if it is any better.

Regards,

ChickenDaddy

Hello Minnehaha,

The pin and coop are sitting on a cinder block and concrete foundation and wrapped in wire mesh. Additionally, it's fenced and double gated so they are nicely protected. So far I have not seen any critters or predators around. I don't think I will have any problems and I'm always on the look out.

Take care,

ChickenDaddy

Love the set up!!! Can't wait for ours to be finally done so we can move the girls in. Ours is very similar to yours. We will be using sand rather than hay or shavings in the run.
