I went to a local Trade Days (GIANT flea market) to buy some replacement pullets yesterday. After so many of my hens were killed by some neighborhood dogs, my flock has seemed so small and pitiful. (I still had about 40 chickens, though.

) I was appalled, absolutely appalled, at some of the chickens I saw there. There were some with pox, some with respiratory infections, some dying from heat stress, some with 3 inch long toenails! (I kid you not. I told you I was appalled.) Quite a large portion were de-beaked, and though I know that isn't a big deal and a lot of people do it, it kinda grosses me out. Long story short, it was a chore finding some decent looking girls to bring home. When we finally did though, these lovely ladies are what we got:

We got 2 amauracana pullets
2 red sex link pullets
and 1 barred rock mix

This girl is pretty tame. She's the only one that will get near me. And she's gorgeous! :)

My 2 amauracanas and 1 red sex link

2 Red sex links. (I've never had sex links before. I heard that they are amazing layers, so sounds good to me! =P They are very flighty, though.)

My Barred rock/something. She had a sister the guy said was part cochin. She had yellow. feathery legs, but her comb wasn't right for barred rock or cochin. I dunno. I wanted a black and white barred hen, though, and this one was pretty. :)

I came home and showered first thing, not wanting to spread all those freaky diseases I was sure I had taken home with me, then set the new girls up in their new (temporary) home! They are quarantining in the "greenhouse" (little room made out of chicken wire we use to harden seedlings in.) and will be added to the flock when they can prove they aren't planning on giving my flock mange or something. =P

Thank you, both. :) I really like them. Though, I think the guy who sold us the barred rock wasn't honest about her age... She seems to be only about 2-3 months old, unless she has bantam in her. Doesn't surprise me. He didn't seem like he really cared what was going on. He watched one of his geese getting attacked by the others and said "yeah, they do it all the time." and leaned back in his chair. He just sat there and half answered your questions, whilst looking annoyed that you didn't already know everything about his birds. But, his birds were healthy so we got her. I don't mind raising her a bit longer before she starts laying. She gets along with the older girls fine, so it doesn't matter. She's pretty. :)
