My new hens have an odor.

Thanks peeps! Off to the feed store on my lunch break tomorrow. Gotta get some mite meds and some supplements. I love my little ladies.

Peace out,

I hope you find out what the smell is from!

from the Finger Lakes of New York! I can't help you with the smell, either, but I would agree with the isolation idea until you find a cause (if you can find a temporary "coop").

Welcome to BYC. You could be smelling cecal poop which is normal about every 8-10 droppings. There may be some stuck in their feathers on their rear end, trim back the fluff and feathers with scissors for a clear 'shot' to the ground if this is the case, or give them a bath, then trim. If the foul odor is enaminating from their head/nostril area...you are most likely dealing with a respiratory infection called Infectious Coryza. Here's a link, scroll down to Infectious Coryza and you can read about it. There are other diseases to read as well if you wish:

Rescuing birds is a noble cause, but you always risk having diseases and parasites bringing them in to infect your healthy flock...sometimes even normally recommended 30 day quarantine is useless in these cases. Some diseases are airborne and most can be transmitted via clothing, shoes, your hands, bird to bird etc....
