The fellow we got Gideon from said he fed him twice daily but did not pet him or interact with him at all, that we should be the same way with him. That lasted all of about 30 minutes.

I couldn't stand it. Even beginning at 9 weeks, with us he'd be a happy bouncing puppy, but when introducing him to a friend or when we took him to get his rabies shot, he approached the "stranger" very cautiously...no "puppy" behavior at all.

This is my first time with an LGD too...I'm totally in love with this dog!

I talked with the breeder last week and he just had another litter of 8. Oh, the temptation! Especially after seeing Nala!

Glenmar, she is truly adorable! Your guy is too, Sherry.

Max, my little 4 month old LGD is a joy! His training is going great. He is every bit as protective as Sherry's guy - we found that out a few days ago when something tried to breach his property across the back. He went into LGD mode and barked like a big dog! He is very socialized to us - not to others yet. But he stays out with the chickens and that includes at night. We do have a fence between like yours, Sherry, but they have been together before and Max is fairly gentle though he still wants to play with them.

i would love to get ones of these dogs for the farm. May i ask what you paid? are they costly? i know a friend of mine had a litter of AKC siberian huskies and she sold all 6 for a grand each. crazy out of my price range

Oh my goodness, yes! He comes in two or three times a day and plays for an hour or so. We hug him and role with him, play tug and then we practice our obedience training. Then, he goes right back out with the girls with no protest whatsoever.

Max is also being taught how to go for a ride with us in a car. He is doing well.

Honestly, this little boy is a low-maintenance treasure. And we got him from a pound for $60. His previous mom could not handle Max because he was house-bound for most of the day in a crate. Then, at night he was unmanageable for her.

Arrghhh! The fact the the "breede" wanted them gone at six weeks says they don't know the first thing about raising dogs, so id disregard any advice they gave. Do you have other dogs, adults she can be with. It really important that she learn dog laguage right now. If you don't, id try to find a frien with some who could keep her a few weeks or at least visitthem. She would have also learned how to be good with stock from mama, a lot less work for you. I can't tell you how many failed lgds we get in rescue who were given this exact advice.
You NEED to build a relationship with her. Not oy so you can do maintence stuff, but so she is willing to take instruction from you. You wouldn't listen to some stranger who came in once and a while and bullied you. Don't expect different with her. She is your partner, give her that respect, and establish a bond and communicate with her.

Gideon is not a pure bred Great Pyr. His mother is 1/2 Maremma 1/2 Anatolian Shepherd. Daddy is 100% Great Pyr. (And from the way he eats and is growing, I think there may be some Clydesdale in there, LOL)

I paid $150 for him...worth every cent!
