Just picked up 2 new Buff Orpington chicks from the feed store today.

They only got in a shipment of pullets, so I wanted to post some pics to show them off and see if I really did get 2 girls.

Are there any good tips for sexing these little things?

they are soooo cute!

watch their combs, if they seem to get very big very early, most likely a roo, but it can still be a pullet with a big comb. also, around 5, 6, or 7 weeks of age, a rooster starts growing tiny itty bitty spurs, they just feel like a little hard peice of dirt of their legs. lastly, roosters tend to have large legs, even at young ages

Number 1 chick in picture 2 looks like it has pullet wings. Hard to say unless you pull wing out to the side and take a pictures of the wings. Pullets inside wing feathers are shorter than outside. Not sure if I am explaining that right but, that's how I know. Also if you flip the chick on its back and it holds its legs up tight to its body/belly its probably a rooster. If it drops its legs down in a relaxed stretched out state you have an 80% chance it's a pullet. (don't hold me to it but, usually those are two tell tail signs)

Holding them on thier backs just makes them squirm, so I can't really tell if they hold the legs a certain way. But I tried.

They look like pullets to me

They do squim at first but, if you hold them and rub their tummy sometimes they settle. If that doesn't work hold them close to brooding lamp and the warmth can help calm them too

Orps can be tricky, they are too young to tell at this point. Vent sexing is the only accurate (90%) way to tell and needs to be done by someone who is trained to do so. Post new pics in a few weeks and you may get better guesses.

I love my orps (unrelated to each other) but they are the dumbest birds I have ever seen.
