my new waterer!

I have the aluminum, which I really like the looks of - so farm retro haha - but I was bummed when I got it and read that you are not supposed to hang it - I wanted it hung to save on floor space - that thing takes up a lot of space. Plus, it dirty in two seconds. So far, this is working out fantastically. I can even just take the hose in and fill it up without having to take it down and carry it anywhere... except for when I'll have to clean it of course. You'll have to hunt around the plumbing section to find just the right stuff - they have pipes and caps in every size.

Does yours have a rubber ring on the threads as a gasket? If so lube it with Vegetable oil and try to re tighten the lid. This sometimes take a try or to to get it to turn smoothly. I have some like this and have to oil the gasket about every 2 weeks or it will let air in and the water out due to no back-pressure.

That waterer should hold about 2 gallons. A 6" cylinder that is 2 feet long have a volume of about 679 cubic inches(pi * radius squared). A gallon of water is 231 cubic inches. So yeah, roughly 2 gallons.

I have a couple of the new chicken waterers that hang. They are green and white and have a 4-H insignia on the label. I thought it would work good in brooders to keep the shavings from getting in them. Well, they do that, but the chickens bump them and they swing and it spills. So, in my wood bottom brooder I have to put a boot tray under it to keep things from getting too mucked up.

This looks great. I have been thinking about doing something like this but just hadn't sat down to get the whole thing worked out. Now, you have done the leg work for me

thanks for posting!

This will be great for my new chicken house and have one in each pen.

Just as a matter of practical fact....water weighs 8 lbs/per gallon. (A fact I learned as the daughter of a fire fighter). So, if you're going to hang it, you may want to limit it to about one gallon, depending on what you're hanging it from. ........but I do like the part about it not getting dirty..... may have to look into it some more.....hmmmmm....
