Hello Everyone,
My name is Alicia and I am very new to owning chickens. My great-grandmother had a coop, and I have many wonderful chicken memories from my childhood. I was looking for a new hobby, so I decided that I wanted to build a coop and start out with 4 chickens. I've had them since May and am loving every minute of it!
I have 1 each of the following breeds:
Rhode Island Red
Buff Orpington
Silver Laced Wyandotte
Australorp
They were about 4 months old when I got them. 3 of them have just started laying in the last couple of weeks and so far we are getting about 2-3 eggs per day. I am enjoying the chickens so much that I am looking forward to expanding this project to include composting and a large vegetable garden. They really do bring a certain peace to the environment.
My awesome, very sweet husband built them a coop, well I say coop...its more like a house...lol. It is amazing. He built it using about 90% recycled materials and things we had hanging around. It is large enough for me to add more chickens later.
My husband and I have 4 boys, 3 still at home, plus an indian ring-necked parakeet (Marcell), a dachshund (Sonny), pitbull (Gracie) and 2 cats (Sneaker and Farryn) . Everyone gets along with the chickens from afar
I look forward to learning from others who have gone before me and making new friends along the way!
