My elderly hen is sick. She won’t eat or drink on her own but I put spinach and a scrambled egg & water in the blender to make it liquid. She will take it, but fights me! She will take water too but not much. She had mites really bad but we bathed her and got all the mites off and she still won’t stand, has her eyes closed and won’t eat or drink on her own. Any suggestions? It may be her time I don’t know but I think she may be about 8 years old. She’s a Brahma.

*All that green stuff is the spinach/egg!

Her face is still red, so not anemic.

Try her with some plain scrambled eggs, & some water on the side.

If you have any, I'd give her some Nutridrench for a boost of vitamins, for energy.

I don’t have any but I could go to Tractor Supply and get some? I asked at Atwood’s yesterday but he said there’s nothing to give her to boost her. She will not eat on her own. She has no interest in eating or drinking. She won’t even open her eyes. She seems irritated when I mess with her. I just don’t know what else to do.

Another possibility is she maybe dying of old age too. A chickens lifespan is 5-10yrs. Some chickens can live to be 18, but that's rare.

Won't hurt to pick some up, & give her some.

I would look for Poultry NutriDrench or Poultry Cell and give 2 ml orally. Until you get some, if you can mix a 1/4 tsp of sugar in some water, you can dip her beak into a small lid or cup, place a dropper inner beak for a few drops, or take a small syringe and give it down the right side of her throat in the back as on this video:

Thank you for the info. Imma run get the vitamins and electrolytes. If it’s her age I guess she will just go on her own? Ugh. I rescued her 2 years ago. She’s just been a pet - never laid an egg. I’ve been treating her for hook worms. I hope that’s not what’s making her feel bad.

Many hens over 2 can suffer from cancer or reproductive disorders. Since she wasn’t laying for 2 years, I would suspect the latter. Crop impaction or sour crop are also common. How does her crop feel? If she won’t drink, I would just try to keep her as comfortable as possible.

She’s long past laying age. She’s been healthy and fine for the 2 years. I took her to the vet not long ago and all her problems were just hook worms and mites.

So, my Rosalita is still living. I don’t know what do do with her as she won’t even open her eyes. Periodically I give her water with a syringe. She takes the water but refuses anything else. The way she shakes her head and fights me when I try to give her nutrition is incredible because she’s hardly had a thing to eat since last Thursday! I did manage to get 2 ml of nutridrench in her day before yesterday but she won’t let me give it to her now. We spilled the whole bottle fighting! I can’t imagine that she could survive this, but how long can she go in so little nutrition?

Keep trying, IMHO, if she is older and is mildly anemic, it could take her longer to recover. (recovery from anemia takes a while)
It would take longer than a young hen, who has more reserves.
Does she feel thin?
