Sorry to read that. Raccoons (those vile creatures) will also reach through the holes in chicken wire to grab and rip apart even a full-grown hen. (If they don't simply rip a hole through the mesh to get inside.)
While many here will claim chicken wire is perfectly good for predator protection because they have never lost a bird, your post is sad proof that they are wrong. Chicken wire, in my estimation, is only good for keeping chickens inside.
That's why I've covered my entire run with 1/2" hardware cloth. It will be years before I recoup the expense through the value of the eggs from my small flock, but I can rest at night knowing they are as protected as I can make them.
