My Peacock flew the Coop!!!HELP

I think you kept them locked up long enough, he came home didn't he?
They will range a great distance. Mine roost in the trees in all weather.

I had to pen my pair back up, he was trying to kill my chicks. The one's with a game hen and my youngsters that are let out every day to free range.
That is one thing that is bad about them, some will go after chicks and some won't. I happened to get a male that does.

I hate having to keep them locked up.

I also had to lock my Guineas up. They are not happy campers!

I keep my hens locked up and let my males free range outside the breeding season. I wont let hens out ever again cause they wander deep into the woods to nest...... so far I have lost every single hen that I had free ranging.

As long as the girls are penned the boys wont go far.

Also I have been told, if you want free range peafowl and have more then 1 bird, after 3-4 months of being penned only let one out and about for roughly a week, to get used to the surroundings without wandering too far off since its buddies are still locked up. Then let the next one out and do the same thing, let those 2 free range for a week before letting out the next bird(if you have more then 2).

The first bird wont go far, and the bird who was let out a week later will stick to the first bird for a while.

Well he was home last night up in the tree in our front yard..he stayed there all night and most of the morning.
Around 1 I had to run to town. He was still up there when I left. As I was coming home my daughter called and said the guy down the road came up and said our peacock was by his house. I was about 10 minutes away at that time. When I got where he was I was able to call to him and see him walking around. I through food out to him and called. He seen I (I think) but wouldn't come close to me. I tried to follow him for a while. Was up to swampy mucky water taller than my barn boots..After a while I lost him in the brush and couldn't see him anymore.
Tonight now I can hear him out there some where. Every once in awhile I hear his calls. I thought of taking the video clip of the wild ones in Florida. Just so I had an actual peacock sound to bring him closer as his girls are so quiet they haven't called to him yet. Will see if he comes home again tomorrow.
I sure hope he does..
Not only was he a pet, but our daughter was going to show him for a 4-H project. What a way to have to spend her first year in 4-H...project-less....

My peafowl are still too young to mate.
My male wandered extensively before I got him a hen. Then he stayed around closer while she was penned up for her quarantine period.
I have her so I can walk right up to her and she will take treats if they are on the ground at my feet, but not from my hand.

Anyway when I let her loose, they stayed together about 1 hour and then he took off again. She stayed here, and he came back at dusk to roost.

I don't know what to tell you about him not coming home every night. I figured if he came home the first night, he would come home every night.
Of course they will do the opposite of what you expect them to do every time, just like kids!

It sounds like you & I may be building huge peafowl pens.

I have my peafowl in a pen with a netting top. So far so good as far as they have not been able to escape. I really considered letting them free range, but we have close neighbors who probably wouldn't be thrilled to find a peacock on top of their car or roof.

I'd seriously consider a pen with a netting roof...

My guys (a trio) have a run about 20x40 ft of 4' chain link, and then bird netting over the top supported by PVC pipe arcs.

I hope you get him back home soon! They will wander all over.

Did you ever get your peacock back? I have 2 in a fairly large pen and have had them for a year and a half in there. I refuse to let them out and risk losing them.

I hope everything is ok. :|

goodness I almost forgot about this post....

Yes BamBam has come home...
The 3 peacocks are living freely around the farm.
During the morning they are usually around the front of the barn by some sheds and then they migrate to the back during the day.
They still come into the barn for feed and water. I keep there dishes filled just incase they aren't getting enough free ranging.
2 days ago they were walking around in the chicken coop. They found both the indoor run and outdoor run.

I actually got to see BamBam display his tail feathers. It was very pretty.

Hopefully someday I can get a good picture of it...

I wouldn't worry too much about peacocks wandering off. The one's we had when I was a kid never did. Then a few years ago I had a neighbor in Indianapolis who raised them. Every day at 4:00 p.m. one of hers came strolling though our yard. We figured he must have had a standing date with something. A couple hours later he'd come wandering back. You could almost set your watch by him. Then one day we came home and there were dozens of them having a party on our patio. We loved it. Not to often you see something like that in the city.

Hmmm...I wonder if I could talk the hubby into peacocks?

A little over three years ago, we had a peacock "adopt" us. We raise chickens and he'd come and eat their food and try to court them. At first he'd disappear for a day or two, and I'd see him down the road a mile or so in a someone's yard. Then he'd be back. After a few months, I guess he liked us enough to stay. I still can't figure out who he belongs to. But I'm pretty sure if you keep plenty of food and his pals around, he'll always come home.

Once I caught my male when he was displaying. He couldn't see around his tail, so I snuck up on him and grabbed him by the ankles.
