My Pean Hen of 6 yrs. this morning is not well...

Hi

Good that you are vaccinating your chicks, but it was Peter that helped us with the vaccine, you can ask him about it, b/c I can't remember what kind it was...
I think it was a dead vaccine, he told us the birds would not be carriers and that was apparently accurate information. Still though, better to vaccinate them as chicks.
We have not vaccinated the new ones, mainly because of the cost of the vaccine compared to the number of new birds we acquire at any one time, which is usually just two or three.
the vaccine doesn't last more a day or so as I remember, and it is expensive to buy vaccine for just a few birds. And the other reason is that our birds are free range and even if we decided to vaccinate the whole flock now, it would be a major chore as they are so difficult to catch. Still, though, we should be thinking about trying to vaccinate the flock again sometime in the near future, probably. If I got information that ILT was in Ohio, I would most certainly take the initiative to vaccinate everyone in the flock.

That's the way ours were too, we had some that did not get sick at all and others that dropped dead bf they really even started to show symptoms. It is a horrible disease.

you are so kind to stay on top of it...I chcked her yesterday and she was looking more alert....I just got home and went out to collect the eggs and she met me at the door and both eyes are open and not swollen shut, and she is still shaking her head a bit like something is sneezing, but she is looking much much better...I gave her some more ivermectin in her water and am hoping it is clearing up for the good. I have a terrible sinus infection myself now and know just how bad she feels.... how are your animals?

Do you have her on antibiotics? If you do she should stay on them ten days to two weeks. If you don't, you probably still need to get some for her, at the very least, Duramycin, 4 tsp per gallon of water.

I hate sinus infections! So painful. Glad to hear she is looking better. I think I would keep her on antibiotics like chicknmania suggested. Even if it isn't soemthing treatable with antibiotics it will help her fight off any additional infection that might come along while her immune system is down. My birds are doing well now. Really glad we vaccinated the group, so at least it stopped spreading. We still have very young chicks we will have to vaccinate when they hit 4 weeks old. But it is what it is. Thanks for asking!

oh ok, I will put her on antibiotics tomorrow....she is in with the chickens, will it affect their eggs, or should she be seperated from them??

My White peahen is a 2yr old and she was sneezing and her eyes were a little puffy
( I took her away from the others)
And I gave her 3 shots 3 days in a row of tylan 200 and she is fine.3cc

The chickens can't drink the same water as her, or you can't eat their eggs for two to three weeks after. You should really try to keep her isolated from everyone, and disinfect all the water bowls and feeders. If no one else is sick by now that's a good sign, but it might be something slower spreading. You have to be really careful and treat illnesses in poultry seriously, as you just never know, and once they start showing symptoms they are usually very sick. If you use injectable Tylan that's your option; then you wouldn't have to put it in the water; but you should;ve had her separated from the others before now.

Also, not sure why you're treating her with Ivermectin? That won't do anything for a respiratory condition. Believe me.. you don't want any respiratory disease circulating through your flock. It is heartbreaking, not to mention being a huge amount of work. The medicines suggested last a long time, so they are worth the money if you want to keep your flock healthy. That is, they are worth the money as long as they are used in time....
