I am a chicken newbie and I ordered my chicks from Meyer hatchery. I ordered 2 Easter eggers, 1 Australorp, 1 Buff Orpington, 1 Welsummer, 1 Cuckoo Maran, and 1 Silver Laced Wyandotte. I was adamant about wanting chickens that could handle a Michigan winter, and they could ONLY be GIRLS as I have one cranky old neighbor and the legality of my keeping hens is questionable. I chose Meyer because they will ship small numbers, they have a 90+% sexing accuracy, and they weren't far from Michigan. The Welsummer chick wasn't available when I called in my order, but again I was positive that I wanted one (I actually wanted two). The lady I spoke with convinced me to try a Cuckoo Maran instead (they also lay dark-ish eggs) and promised to call me when the Welsummer would be available so that all the chicks could be shipped at the same time. Fast forward six weeks - she called like she said she would, the chicks shipped out one day early, they are ALL GIRLS, and there was one extra in the package - another Buff Orpington girl. All chicks survived and thrived. One of the Easter eggers did develop a twisted beak, but she is feisty enough to keep herself fed and lay an egg once in a while. I will DEFINATELY order from Meyer again.
