I have found that to be honest I don't even notice them. When kept inside they will be pretty and long but with freeranging they are much shorter and less noticable.
what's the website for Meyers? Does anyone have it? I'd like to check them out. I ordered from Ideal for my first batch of chicks but they are way down in Texas (I'm in Indiana). I'm wondering where Meyers is.
Oh go with Meyer...I love my birds from them. Out of 21 pullets ordered, I only received one roo which was perfect for me. All the birds are great. I got
BOs
BA
GLW
EEs
S Faverolles
Cochins
RIR
Dominique
Golden Buffs (one laid at 14 weeks old the rest at 16 and 17 weeks old)
PR
The Faverolles are sweeties and cold hardy. I did lose one at 4 days old....she was just never a strong girl. Faverolles are a bit more fragile as chicks but I really love them. One of them is my avatar.
Also, my girls hatched on a Monday in Ohio, shipped on Monday and they were here in Oregon on Tuesday afternoon!
I believe MPC gets their chicks from Meyer anyway...

Not a problem that I noticed....my cochins, faverolles and brahma have feathered feet and I have had no problem. My splash cochin has amazing feathers on her feet and I sometimes wash them for her because of the dirt but she is spoiled anyway. LOL
Meyers is within reasonable driving distance for me so my chicks will arrive in comfort in the back of my station wagon!
< that's not the 'cool' smiley, that's a 'smug' smiley!! *ducks and runs for cover* The other good thing is I can get less than 25 or 50 that way according to the person I talked to.
I too have worried about feathered feet though... I had decided to avoid them, hmmm, I may rethink that now though.
Yes, I believe they get a lot of chicks from Meyers... We bought from them and all chicks were fine except one "packing peanut" they threw in free. I think they asked us before the sent the extra though.
Yes, Meyer will ship fewer birds with 'packing peanuts' included, (usually an obviously different color so you know) but they charge an extra fee. It's understandable I guess, but picking them up avoids that charge.
I am a chicken newbie and I ordered my chicks from Meyer hatchery. I ordered 2 Easter eggers, 1 Australorp, 1 Buff Orpington, 1 Welsummer, 1 Cuckoo Maran, and 1 Silver Laced Wyandotte. I was adamant about wanting chickens that could handle a Michigan winter, and they could ONLY be GIRLS as I have one cranky old neighbor and the legality of my keeping hens is questionable. I chose Meyer because they will ship small numbers, they have a 90+% sexing accuracy, and they weren't far from Michigan. The Welsummer chick wasn't available when I called in my order, but again I was positive that I wanted one (I actually wanted two). The lady I spoke with convinced me to try a Cuckoo Maran instead (they also lay dark-ish eggs) and promised to call me when the Welsummer would be available so that all the chicks could be shipped at the same time. Fast forward six weeks - she called like she said she would, the chicks shipped out one day early, they are ALL GIRLS, and there was one extra in the package - another Buff Orpington girl. All chicks survived and thrived. One of the Easter eggers did develop a twisted beak, but she is feisty enough to keep herself fed and lay an egg once in a while. I will DEFINATELY order from Meyer again.
