my pet chicken reviews

Hi all, I thought I'd follow up on my June 5th post. My friend and I shared an order from MPC of 2 standard sized birds and 12 bantams (various breeds). They're about 11 weeks old, and it looks like ALL are female. One of the bantams, a cochin, MIGHT be a boy, but probably not. Pretty darn good for sexing bantams, even if the one is a boy! Overall, I am thrilled with our order: overnight delivery, all in excellent health, and bantams sexed at over 90% accuracy. Definitely my best hatchery experience thus far.

We now have a couple things to add...1 of my standards is a roo and the red silkie we ordered is actually a partridge now that she's feathered out. the roo is the biggger issue...i hope all the silkies turn out to be girls! if the one boy were a silkie instead ok but a big roo may hurt a silkie while mating. no space to separate them or get more standards to fill out his harem.

Sigh. but we knew sexing isn't perfect...i just hoped chances were better with standards.

I ordered 9 various chickens from MPC in 2010. I live in California and if i remember correctly I received my order within 2 days. They were all in good condition except I only received 8 of the 9 I ordered. One standard easter egger was left out. All of them including some bantams were females as ordered and they all did really well.

Customer service was awesome and they reimbursed me for the one that was left out.

It was really important that I get hens and not roosters because I lived in a city that allowed only 3 chickens. Obviously I couldn't decide on only 3 so I was over city ordinance by 6. I didn't want any Roosters to complicate things or irritate my uptight neighbors.

I had to move last year and found a farm to give my girls too. I have since moved to a new place where I can have chickens again and my list for Spring is at 15 already.

They have answered all my emailed questions within a few hours typically and even though they are a bit higher for shipping their sexing accuracy is important to me. Plus I want one of many different kinds of chickens so their product/service is perfect for me. I don't want any extra roosters for "warmth" either. :):p

I ordered 4 chicks from them, an EE bantam, a RIR, a Silver-Laced Wyandotte, and a Silver Cuckoo Marans. They arrived today and all are healthy and hale, bright eyes and clean vents. They hatched yesterday, so shipping was very fast. I'm very pleased with them and I'd order from them again.

Awwwww. Thanks for posting a pic of your fuzzybutts. See, that cuteness is why I just ordered multiple hatchery catalogs today - we are justifying adding at least 4 more hens after having to rehome our rooster : ) Will probably use MyPetChicken again, so we can have sexed silkies. Still wondering about the sex on the 4 we have.

I ordered six hens- i ordered and have documents for all hens- i got 33% of them roosters. I live in a city with an ordinace of no roosters. there was nothing that they were willing to do on their end to resolve the issue. I have two roosters, live in a metro area, involved with chicks in the city org and MPC cannot figure out sex. yes, errors on a few, i understand, but 2 out of six is pretty bad odds. Plus, when calling the response from customer support or customer lack of support was nill. Go figure, you got the live chickens and it is your problem....so be very careful as their is no recourse and you are left hanging with roosters. I knew they were roosters within six weeks telling them.

Hmm, that is odd. They say on their website that they refund sexing errors in full, if more than 10% of them were sexed incorrectly, as long as you report them within a specific time frame after ordering:

(scroll down to "baby chicks - sexing guarantee")

Perhaps you missed that time frame?

Further update - can't edit my post somehow. Our silkies were in fact all hens and all 4 are laying. The red is in fact a red, but really had to get older for her color to show properly. I'm still pleased with our order from MPC.

As far as the roosters - it stinks, but they do warn you it's not a guarantee. They promptly refunded us for our partridge rock roo, which is all their policy calls for and I knew that prior to ordering.

If someone is in an area where they have no recourse should a rooster show up, it seems prudent to buy sexlink hens or buy pullets. No hatchery guarantees sex except for sexlinks - you can hope for the best but have to prepare for the worst. Was I frustrated at 1 out of 3 standards being a roo? You bet. But I knew it was a risk and MPC did exactly as they'd stated.
