I just ordered from my pet chicken & 2 of the chicks died in the first few days. They say they will send us more chicks, but we are hesitant to order more. What should I do?

It's not uncommon to lose a chick or two from the stresses of shipping or rough handling at the postal service. Even if you buy from a local feed store people seem to comment that that lost one or two a short time later. Was the weather hot in your area or where the chicks came from. A lot of people will not ship birds until the weather cools down - they will only sell locally during a hot spell.

If you don't care to do it again and not much money is involved you may just want to swallow your loss. If you go to "where am I, where are you." forum, you can locate and post on your state thread and maybe find someone close to you that has chicks. Then you could bypass shipping and see what you are getting first.

Sorry for your loss. How many where in your order? Losing 2 out of 25 isn't terribly bad - don't know where you live but it's hot where I'm at and chicks can be fragile. On the other hand, if you order 5 and lost 2....that's too many. One thing I do when I order chicks is track them and pick them up the postal hub (where the mail goes before it goes to my local post office) - this takes a day of off the chick's travel time. Also, are you dipping their beaks in water when you get them. Chicks need to be "taught" to drink by dipping their beaks in water the first time or two. Good luck to you!

Chick losses, especially during times of extreme weather, are not at all unusual. In this excessive heat and humidity the next shipment might face the same end result. It is one of the drawbacks of buying shipped birds - some just don't survive.

I am not going to mention the hatcheries because I guess stuff does happen.

I ordered 35 chicks this year during June (which is warm is SC) from a hatchery from a Northern State and they sent 36 and I only lost one.

two weeks later another order came from a Lower Western State (weather alot warmer there) and I lost 19 of the twenty chicks I ordered.

9 DOA

The rest all passed within 3 days

I named the lone survivor UNO.

The second Hatchery was very polite and offered to ship another order or refund my money. I chose the latter.

They shipped and arrived fast but the heat would definatley have to be considered as a strong possibility as to what went wrong.

I only ordered 4 chicks, so I do want to have more chickens, & they r offering to send us 4 more so........ What do u guys think I should do? :(

Welcome to BYC! I've ordered from them before and didn't have any losses, baby chicks have a high mortality rate especially shipped chicks. You can ask to have them shipped when it's not so hot, maybe later on in the season? Good luck to you.
