Hi Everyone,

I came across this forum by chance when searching the internet for anything that could help with my pet rooster not being able to poop. He's an indoor rooster, very tame. He doesn't sleep in a cage, but on the top part of a chair. He's been eating fine the last few days, but yesterday, I noticed he's been having a hard time trying to poop, which for him, is weird because he goes without a problem.

Last night, he was able to poop a regular dropping, but I had to help with a paper towel to get it out. I thought after that, the problem was resolved. But throughout the night, he keep on straining (when he does strain, he makes a noise) and nothing but white milky -ish substance is coming out.

He did none of his regular activities today such as sunbathing, and taking his afternoon nap. My Mum said not to feed him anything today cause his crop/stomach felt a bit full ish. He did drink water which I was hoping would help, but it didn't :( I've been trying to help him all day hoping to unclog whatever it is that's blocking him for pooping, and since he's trying so hard, he's bleeding. I don't understand what's happening to him. I don't know what to do, and I don't think Petsmart's vet would check him out if I took him.

I really do hoping some of you can shade some light on the issue. Thank you very much.

If his crop isn't emptying he may have a blockage somewhere. There are laxatives for chickens:

But, I don't know whether it is a good idea to give him a laxative or not if he has something like a gizzard blockage or crop blockage. If you determine that he has sour crop see the sour crop cured with monistat thread. If he has an impacted crop then he may need surgery for that. I have never dealt with either one but here:

Sorry I don't know what is wrong with your little guy. If you give him a laxative and he has a blockage he could throw up and aspirate/choke so I would only do it if you feel you have to do it.

Check too to see if he is getting what he needs too from his food- and doesn't have an infection anywhere. Make sure he doesn't have worms if he goes outside on the soil. Worms can cause diarrhea/weight loss, lethargy. Sour crop issues are sometimes caused by fungal infection. These are just thoughts that may help you think of some other things it could be...I don't know what is wrong but hope he feels better soon!

Hello,

Thank you so much for your response!! It means a lot.

How do you REALLY tell whether his crop isn't empty? Also , what exactly is a sour crop? and impacted crop? Sorry, but being my first pet, I've never known much about these stuff :/ Plus, I've had a problem with him so it wasn't really a concern.

Well, yesterday, my Mum suggested to get a worm for the yard for him to eat (my parents always tell me those are protein for him even though I always protest about it). I want to say that it may be corn that he's been eating for a couple of days..but I have no idea. I'm trying to stay positive and strong for him, but when he strains and make that noise, it's so difficult for me to hold it together :(

I'll keep you posted. Thanks again for you help!

Does anyone know what sort of vet I should take my rooster to? From the searches and such I came across and read, I saw avian vet. It doesn't say they tend to roosters/hens but birds like macaws, budgies, etc. Would they even look at him if I took him?

The avian and exotics vet that I used to take my pets to saw chickens. Give them a call.

Hi Everyone,

How are you? We took him to the vet on Saturday (although we didn't see the actually avian specialist till today).
The Doctor we saw on Saturday gave him a fluid shot because he was dehydrated; also, he got Pyrantelpamoate (dewormer) and antibotics (Trimethoprim-Sulfa).
He was able to poop, but NOT his normal poop--these were a dark liquid green. He DID also poop some minor hard poop, but not much since it is difficult for him.

Well, today when we actually saw the specialist (and please keep in mind that she has never dealt with/and or have examined a rooster or chicken before),
she told us a whole bunch of stuff, but I will just tell you guys the main ones that I would really appreciate your
suggestions on. She examined him (his butt), and apparently found a mass against his wall and told us it bleeds steadily when noticed.
Now, she told us she doesn't know what it is and that we would need to sedate him, since he was in a lot of pain, to know exactly what that mass is.
Guys, I'm a student, and the sheet we were present with was pretty much an entire semester.

After my Mum and I discussed what we wanted to do, which was get an X-ray done on him to see if anything is blocking his intestine, we were told the best
option (money wise) is to do the surgery because the x-ray wouldn't really tell us anything. So, I said to my Mum when we were in the car, why would they put
x-ray on the sheet if it wouldn't tell us anything? And, my Mum told me: That's what I'm thinking; how can you do a surgery without getting an x-ray??

Anyway, we also said we wanted another fluid shot for him since we was dehydrated (we paid $19.00 for that on Saturday! and on the sheet today, it said $38.00,
so I asked the technician about that; and she was like, yeah, I don't know why Dr. -insert name here- did that). She went back I asked the Doctor about the fluid shot
cause she wasn't sure the Doctor would want to give him that. So, the Doctor came in herself, and she exampled hat the surgery is the best option, etc AND then she
told us that our next option would be euthanasia because he was in so much pain.

I went cold when she said. He is a VERY healthy bird, and when we was in that room when the technician came in to fill whatever paper she needed to present to the Doctor,
he was investigating the room, and he even CROWED in there.

It's six days now that he's been sick and unable to poop. He bleeds a lot whenever he tries to poop, and strains because it's so hard for him.
If anyone knows of anything, of what it could be, I would greatly appreciate it. Please.

Thank you.

Oh, I forgot to mention that the Doctor thinks the mass might be cancer..but doesn't know until the surgery is done and they get the lab results.

GREAT, GREAT, GREAT X A ZILLION NEWS EVERYONE!!!!!! MY ROOSTER IS DOING WELL!!!

Yesterday, when he was straining to poop again, and I was trying to help him, he pooped out an IMMENSE piece of poop!!!!!
I am beyond certain that was the cause of him not being able to poop!!! He later had pooped out a dark green liquid poop that
came out without any straining or blood.

ALSO, he was able to get a good night's rest! Didn't get up to strain or make any noise trying to poop. Slept like a baby.
The poop on the paper were watery/liquid kind--none of his hard normal poop as yet, but he needs to get back his strength.
He's eating normal. Yesterday, after pooping that comet size poop, he seemed better because he was devouring that
watermelon my Mum was feeding him.

I am so happy. We took a nice morning walk. He's currently sunbathing here in the living room :) I still have to keep a good watch on him, checking his poop.
Also, I will continue to give him the antibiotics though, and feed him lots of liquid to flush out whatever else is in his system.

My family and me are beyond happy he's doing very well.
