Actually post #18 and 25 in that thread are the ones to read. And I have seen more good info since then.

Good luck! Spring IS hormonal, crazy, rooster time.

#18 is the one I was thinking about...I knew it was Bee that post it.

I wish I could "bookmark" that one for everyone!

Thanks Egg!

I saved it in my bookmarks (thread on page 2) under a file labeled chicken folder, and I open another tab when I need to access and then copy and paste the link back to my current thread... and it's easy to remember 18 and 25 since I referenced it so many times now.

Had to learn how to reference some material as well because it truly is more helpful to provide links.

Very helpful information for roosters. Also are roosters kept in bachelor groups less likely to get aggressive? I have three roosters so I intend to move them into their own bachelor group away from the girls asifr from the buff rooster who is going to breed with the buff hen.

Thank you all so much! I knew there had to be a link or a website that explains crazy rooster behavior! So they do get hormonal this time of year? Because my normally sweet hen pecked my hand and yelled the loudest chicken scream when I took her egg the other day! Is that what is called 'broody' behavior? My rooster is really clingy and loving to me. It's disturbing that he acted a fool! No kids in my family. Or any on this street. He is pinned up. But I watch them a few hours everyday so they can free range.

Is she staying in the egg laying nest...?
Not wanting to come out?

I think broody means they lay eggs and don't really like to leave them..at all...maybe for a few quick minutes each day to eat/poo but that is it..they stay on the egg..
Could she JUST starting to become broody.

I keep boys in a stag pen.

What kind of aggression are you taking.. to you, each other, their mates?

I have had them all range together with my girls as well. I have 30 ish girls. I keep them separate because I want to manage my breeding.

They don't even start to fight each other over girls until they reach past a year old in m y experience. They all just try to mate as often as possible and will even take turns if they get a girl down.

Aggression is not a problem with enough space and visual barriers. Of course individual roosters may pose more of a challenge.

She seems to just give up when I get the egg out from under her. She never has yelled and pecked at me before. She must be trying to go broody then?

Maybe..
What breed of chicken is she and how old is she....
(you may have already mentioned this..if so pls refresh my memory)

I'll admit it. I am not nearly as forgiving and patient as a lot of people on this list. My way of handling an aggressive rooster is to give him a nice long soothing hot bath with some onions, garlic, salt and pepper, and a bay leaf or two added to the bath water. Unless the rooster is an outstanding breeding prospect, if he attacked me, into the pot he would go. One problem with raising a rooster as a pet is that he views you as another chicken. When he grows up he tries to show his dominance over you. For those of you who remember how sweet and cute he was as a baby, what he was and what he is is not the same. I'm sure even Jeffrey Dahmer was a cute baby. Even a small rooster can hurt you, and medical bills are expensive

She is a new hampshire red. I don't know much about that breed. I got her off my dad, for my now 'possessed'rooster to have as company lol
