my poor babies!!! and i thought i was so smart!!

Pulletkeeper - I can't even keep one of those cones on my dogs head that they give you at the vets office, a dead chicken would definitely not last more than 5 minutes unless I hog tie her...

Cracked Egg - I lost 3 of my hens today to my dog. She tore through lattice & then screen to get off our enclosed deck & outside. She also had a pretty big jump down from the deck. We have lived here a year & she has never done this before. I took her only a minute to kill them, basically the time it took me to use the bathroom & my husband to run from the back of the property. She snapped the neck & then went on to the next. Now I know better than to leave her on the porch unsupervised...lesson learned. I would never get rid of the dog. I have had her for almost 10 years & other than snakes & mice she has never killed anything. I knew this would happen if she ever got out, I just did not know she could get off of the deck.

I have a weiner dog that loves to try to kill chickens. She has never managed it because we don't let her into the yard where the chickens free range - She is an indoor dog. But, she has escaped and can run down a chicken in seconds - then I catch up to her just about the time she has started trying to pull the "stuffing" out of them. Poor chickens! LOL I take it with some humor and understanding, and hopefully this will be less painful to you over time, looking back. weiner dogs like mine are hunting dogs designed to be fearless and relentless - to attack a badger in a tiny hole underground face to face - they are fierce because they were bred that way, so I don't get upset about my doxies chicken chasing. She really can't help it, she was like this when she was a tiny pup, I have seldom seen a dog with such a drive to hunt & kill small animals. Lots of other breeds or dogs are like that, bred for hunting or ratting purposes, and it is hard to completely subjegate that part of the dog's nature. Don't feel bad about what happend, learn from it and make your pen or run as solid as possible. Electric is a very effective deterrent. Cheap, too.

Thank you so much for your kind words and advice!!!! I'm resigned to the idea that she did kill all but one.

I really appreciate the warning that she might still be able to kill an adult chicken... I don't know what to think about her... She is an over sized min pin, a natural ratter, a great hunter, but she has never killed anything other than mice/moles and small wild birds... I had planned to train her when they are full grown hens. I just didn't think she needed it yet cuz they weren't around her/didnt think she could get to them....

Hard lesson learned... She keeps dinding dead bodies and bringing them to be... I don't know how I mmissed them... She thinks she's doing good, but I will get her broke of this...
