Can anyone help me? Ginger hasn't been eating now for 3 days and her stools are an orangey color and she just stands under the coop all day by herself . She has a runny nose and in her mouth is very mucusy. I have tried to feed her soft bread and milk but there is so much mucus in her throat, she cant swallow it.

She has lost a worrying amount of weight too.

At night, the others all go into the coop, but I have to put her in myself.

Does anyone know what I can do.

Separate her from the other birds. It sounds like an infection. Maybe someone on here can tell you if it's coccidiosis. If it is, you'll need to treat the whole flock with meds in the water.

Perhaps she has vitamin A deficiency?

Even if that isn't the problem, giving her supplements of vitamins and eletrolites at this time will help her overcome whatever it is that is distressing her.

If you don't already have poultry vitamins, you can give her children's Poly vi sol without iron and you can give her pedialyte.

Do any of your other chickens show the same symptons? I suppose that three days isn't enough for vitamin a deficiency to show itself but maybe she has been developing the clinical signs for awhile before you noticed it? Just grasping at straws here.

dhlunicorn is one of the BIG GUNS on the forum about medicines and many illnesses. Maybe she will see your post.

Alternatively, try a search for her posts and see if any of the discussions match what is happening to your little bird.

Wishing your bird the best with recovery.

Separate her immediately. Put her in a small cage or box, preferably inside where she can be observed and treated. I don't know about the orangy stool, but it could be coccidia. That would be treated with sulmet in her water...can purchase at local feed store.

The mucous is some sort of upper respiratory infection probably. The sulmet can also treat infectious coryza, if that is what is causing the mucus.

Coccidiosis is a disease caused by microscopic protozoans (one-celled organisms) called Coccidia that affect fowl worldwide. It is generally found in the terminal ileum, caecum, and rectum of chickens. Mortality and morbidity is variable with this disease. Although there are many species of coccidia that can infect fowl, domestic animals, and humans each species is host specific. After an outbreak of a specific species of coccidia, the flock will develop a resistance to the exposed coccidia species but remain resistant to other infective species. Chickens are susceptible to any of nine coccidia species, turkeys are susceptible to seven species, and quail to four.

Signs

Droopy feathers
Poor production
Ruffled feathers
Closed eyes
Diarrhea
Pale face
Paralysis
Blood in feces

Infectious Coryza

Infectious Coryza is caused by the haemophilus paragallinarum bacteria, and is very common worldwide in fowl.
Signs
Watery eyes
Facial swelling, including one or both eyes swelled shut
Foul smelling discharge from the nose
Diarrhea
Low egg production
Wheezing

Here is a link that may be helpful in identifying what it may be. You are the best person to be able to determine the exact symptoms. Good luck!
