I've never had a RIR rooster since.....and that was 30 years ago!! I like my barred rocks and marans. Haven't had a mean one yet. I'm getting some wyandotte and hopefully they'll be calm too.
My Br roo has chased my daughter, 4, and my son,7, on their bikes. They stay clear of Muffin. This morning my daughter was picking up her duck and she got attacked by my Dutch Bantam. He's about 4 months old and is getting really cocky, he chased the whole flock the other day and now he's decided to challenge everyone! The little guy can't weigh over a pound. He did scratch up her leg and bite her, even without spurs. At least he's still mellow ennough to wear as a hat.
Mines is a Barred Rock. He's always been nice, we have pet him alot.
Update:
Well I decided we had to take this head on because my son loves those birds and he wants to take care of them too and not have to be scared. So I advised him how to handle ROO if he charged him and it WORKED! I was watching from a spot Roo couldn't see me (just in case he got real nasty) My son went in and didn't touch the girls at all and gave them water and Roo came up and charged at him. Jake stood strong and raised his arms up and yelled GIT and put his foot up in Roos face and kicked at him (he did'nt kick him) but more like to stop him and Roo backed right down and ran off. I don't want that Rooster thinking he can attack Jake when I'm not around so I felt like it was the right thing to do. I just told Jake NEVER take your eyes off him because then he will suprise you. I will certainly remove his spurs when he gets them though.
Hi Scmoo, im glad that worked, my roo just got nastier when I stood up to him though.
Re: rooster hat: Hey dragonlili is that rooster alive??????
I cant see his head!!!!!cute pic.
good job schmoo, if that doesn't work...put him in a pot!! I had one a zillion years ago that attacked my small daughter, he just wouldn't stop so he met his maker. I won't have a mean chicken on my place...hen or roo. So far they all seem to sense that.
