My "Puckerel"

X's 2 here. By 17 weeks a speckled sussex rooster would have an inch tall comb. Those long feathers on speckled sussex hens always throw people for a loop that haven't ever owned the breed.

So they are common? I have another SS and she had long tail feathers but in getting her adult feathers, she lost them and the ones that replaced them arent that long. I only have 2 SS chickens, the others are Australorps and Welsummers

Yeah, it was wishful thinking, but it was too late to change it afterwards. But Iris is better than the rooster we named Bianca :p
:lau:gig:gig:gigBetween Iris and Bianca, I had to give my hysterical laughter to you! I have had 4 roos simultaneously, 2 were auto-sexing, 1 was a true blue whiting ( I hatched 1 pullet and 1 cockerel my neice named the grey chick grey squirrel) and the 4th roo arrived as a 4 month old French Black Copper Marans. We got lucky with Grey Squirrel! Can you keep roos? The township won't let us, even tho all the immediate neighbors are ok with them. :tongue

Yeah, not a peep out of this one.
By 15 weeks all the cockerels I've had were already trying to crow, and a couple were trying to jump on the hens! They had delusions of grandeur!
From what I've been reading, SS begin to lay at around 24 weeks. Is her comb changing color? It should be pretty bright red when she is about to lay.

We've had four roos total, Prince, Bianca, Angel, & Iris. Unfortunately we can't keep roos, but we're waiting as long as possible to give Iris away
