My Pullet Survived a Dog Attack, I Need Advice!

Hi all,
Yesterday my Akita got out of the house and we didn't know. He has figured out how to open the screen door. He killed two of my hens, my rooster caused a diversion so other 6 hens/pullets managed to get to the woods. The last two pullets came home this morning, I thought they were gone for sure. My Red Sexlink Pullet (25 Weeks now) has two pretty good punctures on her back. She is obviously stressed and in pain. I put electrolytes in their water this morning. I have never treated a chicken before, how can I help her? Do you think there is a reasonable chance for her to survive? Thanks for any advice!!

Oh so sad ! Just keep her in her coop and let her rest. just keep her clean free of dirt and treat her with antibiotic ointment (for people) I hope she will be fine !

So sorry! That is really stressful! Isolate the little injured one for sure. If you can, bring her into the house or garage & make her comfortable in a box or pet carrier. If she is in a warm, safe environment, then she has a better chance of allowing herself to rest. Depending on the size of the puncture wounds, you might need antibiotics to knock out any infection. If you can, get some Clavamox (Amoxicillin) you can get it at the vet. It's pretty inexpensive if you just call them & don't have to actually make an appt. That's a last resort though.
At home:
Start with cleaning the area with water, let it dry then apply neosporin (not the kind that tingles, the regular kind) directly to the wound. Until it heals, she needs to be isolated. If you let her back out in the coop the other birds will more than likely pick at the wound, they just can't help it once they see red. You can also spray this stuff called Blue-Kote that is an antiseptic spray that turns the area blue (looks super funny, but it works!) you can get it at the feed store.

Thanks so much! I made her some scrambled eggs and she was surprising hungry and she is drinking the electrolytes. I will start treating her right away. Thanks for the advice!

So sorry to hear. I agree with other posters ( love this site - great advice ) . I lost one hen to a dog & it really upset the rest of the flock. Stress is not there friend. Hope you injured recovers well. Take care

Keep doing that, it's remarkable what they can heal from, as long as she's eating and drinking she has a good chance.

I'd bring her in, clean the wounds really well and put neosporin (without pain reliever) on them so she doesn't get an infection. Plus, you don't want her out in the coop where there are flies, if the flies get in the wound then there will be maggots in her wounds.

She is eating and drinking, so that is a good sign. You can also crush up 1/4 regular aspirin in 1 cup of water for pain.
