my puppy dogs!

Beautiful!

I have a friend who breeds Show Whippets and Rhodesian Ridgebacks. Absolutely gorgeous dogs! They are always offering to start me off with a retired show whippet to start with in some local shows and to breed, but right now I am away at college. The whippets just have such awesome personalities though. Definitely a breed of dog I will think about when it comes time to get one of my own!

Its best to keep them fenced. Their sight capabilities are unbelievable (most can see a bunny rabbit over 1/2 a mile away as clear as day). We at the Adoption kennel always tell people never underestimate their prey drive and flight capabilities. Greyhounds can hit full speed (45mph) in just a few strides and are never taught in the racing industry to return so if your dog runs away after something he or she may not return. Now I have a friend who has a greyhound and she lives outside. She has the garage for shelter but she is an outdoor dog on 22 acres. So it can be done but once again I would not recommend it. A fenced area is best. I hope this helps.

No we do not do anything to the ears at the track (I work in a racing kennel). His ear happened on the farm when he was a puppy. The puppies are raised in whelping houses at first and then indoor areas with access to outdoor runs. They are kept together and are very active as pups. I am sure a brother or sister got a little ruff and tore it playing and running. This is not uncommon, greyhounds skin is very thin and tears easily so you have to be careful about letting them run in a large area like a dog park. I can not tell you how many stitches we have had to get after running at the park because they ran into a stick or fell jumping over a stump. But they love to run so we just get fixed up and head back to the park. All greyhounds ears are tattooed on the farm when they are puppies. One ear has the litter registration number and the other has the month/year of birth and pup letter (the order of when they were born, A was the first pup, B was the second pup etc..) If you are interested there is a documentary called Born to run. It is very accurate about the life of a racing greyhound. If you would like to check it out there is a link on the Midsouth Greyhound Adoption website. I work for the Bussmann Balakas Racing Kennel at Southland Park in West Memphis AR and volunteer for MSGAO. As far as being couch potatoes, THEY ARE! Leopold and the rest of the gang sleep all of the time. We play in the back yard a couple times a day for 20 minutes or so and go the the park to run a few times a month. That is all they really need. They are very content to lay around and relax.
